The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors met for the regular meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. Chief Financial Officer Monica Gargus gave the summary of operations for August that showed inpatient admissions and outpatients registered were down for the month. The hospital had a loss from operations of $319,753 with an excess of expenses over revenues of $317,327. Chief Nursing Officer Mary Lou Brooks reported during the month there were 55 acute care admissions, 742 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 120 minutes. Also during the month, there were 215 ambulance runs with 209 patients being assessed and 163 patients transported to the hospital as well as 18 surgery cases, 1,540 outpatient registrations, 235 home health visits, 7,362 lab tests, 627 radiological procedures, 196 CT scans, 32 MRI scans, 9 nuclear med scans, 418 rehab treatments, 202 dialysis treatments and 269 clinical visits of which 103 were for podiatry. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor stated the SMDH Hospital Auxiliary met this month with 11 members attending. A “Scrubs and Beyond” sale will be held October 15 at the hospital library and a “Linen Sale” will be held on November 12 & 13 at the Dent County Fire Station. The next meeting of the auxiliary will be October 6 at 12 noon at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Pryor reported on the medical staff meeting that was recently held. The staff recommends and the board approved allowing courtesy staff privileges for Michael Klein, MD (Cardiology). Klein will begin conducting a clinic in November at the hospital. Assistant Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas gave the Electronic Medical Records report. The hospital continues to get physicians set up on the new program. The MEDHOST version upgrade will be conducted on November 4th. Pryor reported there were 410 participants at the September Health Fair and the hospital is in the process of scheduling next year’s health fairs at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Pryor reported that the SMDH Family Medicine will have extended clinic hours beginning Monday. Hours will be Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and Fridays from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Walk-ins are encouraged and appointments can also be made. If the new extended hours are utilized by the community on a consistent basis, then expanded days could be added in the future. Joe Brand reported on the Foundation Advisory Board meeting that was recently held. A SMDH Foundation 5K Fun Run will be held November 7th at Montauk State Park with a $25 entry fee and the proceeds raised will benefit the Jean B. Weaver Dialysis Unit. A SMDH Foundation dinner will be held Thursday, October 8th at the Salem United Methodist Church with proceeds benefiting the Emergency Department. Mary Lou Brooks reported that a committee is working on the Community Health Needs Assessment and Dr. Prince will serve as the physician liaison. Brooks gave an update on a CLIA survey that is held yearly. There were 9 minor deficiencies with 6 of them being policy related. There was one deficiency in the Long Term Care department that related to food temperature, air-drying kitchenware and freezer storage. All deficiencies have been corrected. There were no deficiencies in the radiology department. The board approved the purchase of four beds for the Long Term Care department at a cost of $5,272 for all four from Direct Supply. Chairman Judy Thompson proposed and the board approved the Finance Committee appointment of Ken Sheriff as Chairman with Ray Bruno and Dennis Fiebelman serving on the committee. The board then went into closed session.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 PM. After approval of the agenda and during the hearing of persons, Amanda Horton of the New Harmony Church wishes permission to block off Center Street from Oak Street to Pershing Avenue on October 31st for a church activity. In unfinished business at the last board meeting, the board postponed the appointment of Todd Kinerk to the Planning & Zoning Board since Kinerk was a member of the Planning & Zoning Board of Adjustment. The Board was awaiting clarification if Kinerk could serve on these two boards at the same time. City Administrator Ray Walden will address the Board with various items and projects around town. Mayor J.J. Tune would like to talk to the Board about sick leave pay. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Bill #3304 which is an ordinance required to allow the Mayor to sign the contract with MoDOT for land acquisition to acquire property within the runway 17-runway protection zone, will be presented to the Board. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of addressing contracts, litigation, personnel and real estate. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem 2015 Football Homecoming will be held this Friday night before the football game with Willow Springs that starts at 7:00. The Senior Attendants will be Courtney Richter, Haley Murr and Cara Sercl, the Junior Attendant will be Rebecca Fiaoni, the Sophomore Attendant is Madison Shaw and the Freshman Attendant is going to be Kirsten Golden. This year there will be a Homecoming Dance and it will be Saturday night from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. in the gym.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at Thayer today for a key SCA contest starting at 4:30. Salem is 10-7 on the year and 3-0 in the SCA.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Houston tonight starting at 6:00 in SCA Play.

The St. Louis Blues will host Dallas tonight in pre-season NHL action starting at 7:00. The Blues are 1-1 in the pre-season.

Matt Carpenter hit a pair of two-run homers, Lance Lynn pitched six scoreless innings and the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Cincinnati Reds 10-2 Wednesday night. Randal Grichuk and Peter Bourjos also homered as the Cardinals hit four for the first time this season. Matt Holliday returned to the St. Louis lineup for the first time since July 29 and contributed an RBI double. The Cardinals start a 4 game set with Milwaukee tonight at 6:15 on KSMO Radio.

Lorenzo Cain singled home pinch-runner Paulo Orlando in the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals rallied past the Seattle Mariners 4-3 Wednesday night to close in on their first division title in 30 years. The victory reduced the Royals' magic number to two for clinching the AL Central crown. The Royals play Seattle tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Donald Poskin of St. James, age 85, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery with Military Honors at the Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. James Kiwanis Backpack Program or the St. James United Methodist Church.
