The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5600, 6200 and 6370 while materials would be added to county road 6435 and brush would be cut on county road 5390. Purcell said he would have two men working on an electrical problem on truck #117 and two men would be hauling brown rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson indicated materials would be added to and grading would be done on Dent County Road 2580 while brush would be cut on county roads 5240 and 5260. Larson did say a man would be screening brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said Tuesday at the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Executive Board meeting, they scored and evaluated 17 different applications totaling $428,071 in requests. The problem is the district only has $183,095 to allocate. Skiles said they would meet again next Tuesday to prioritize and award the recipients. Assistant County Clerk Crystal Pilkington said the first day to vote absentee will be September 27th for the General Election and the last day to register for the election will be October 12th.  The commission discussed the CDBG grant the fire department would like to submit through the county to repair their roof, parking lot and bathrooms. Skiles said that after discussing the issue with Kelly Sink-Blair at MRPC, he was comfortable with the commission supporting the Dent County Fire Protection District in sponsoring the grant, and the commissioners agreed for a vote of 3-0. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the CART figures received in the month of September. She stated the CART monies received in September this year came to $59,925.42 while last year in September, the county received $60,482.62. So far in 2016, the CART Tax revenues are $1,525.88 more than in 2015 and that is about 1/3rd of one percent. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host the Mill Mountain Discovery Hike on Saturday, September 24th. Mill Mountain is located in the heart of the Riverways, between Klepzig Mill and Rocky Falls. Hikers will traverse 1.5 miles of the Ozark Trail through the diverse and beautiful Mill Mountain Natural Area while stopping to see  the land through the eyes of its pioneers.  Participants will meet at Rocky Falls at 8:30 a.m.  A shuttle will be provided to transport hikers to the historic Klepzig Mill, built in 1928 on the edge of a picturesque bedrock outcropping where Rocky Creek once powered the humble mill. After a tour of this charming historic site, the hike will proceed south on the Ozark Trail.  Along the way, hikers will explore forests, woodlands, glades and fens.  The Mill Mountain shut-ins, where Rocky Creek squeezes between bedrock and massive boulders, will offer magnificent scenery.  The hike is expected to conclude by noon, back at the participant vehicles. This event is free of charge, but space is limited, so please contact Dena Matteson at (573) 323-4814 to pre-register and receive detailed information and instructions.
