The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds hunters they must show proof of their Hunter Education certification number to buy firearms hunting permits if their certification number is not already in the Department’s permits system. A hunter education course is required for hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1967 who hunt with firearms. Proof of certification from any state is acceptable. Hunters can find their “Hunter Ed #” on the front of their Missouri Conservation Heritage Card, or on their temporary Hunter Education certificate. If hunters do not have one of these, they can call the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Hunter Education or Permit Services staff at 573-751-4115. If you need to get a Hunter Education Permit and have not attended a class, courses are beginning to show up on the mdc.mo.gov website. A course will be held in Bunker this Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00 at the Bunker High School as well as at the Salem Community Center at the Armory on October 10th from 5:30 to 9:30.

On Saturday, September 24th, volunteers across the country will visit their favorite parks, rivers, wildlife preserves, or forests to give back to the treasured lands where we play, learn, and relax.  Ozark National Scenic Riverways will celebrate National Public Lands Day – the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands - with an outdoor stewardship event at Round Spring from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Interested volunteers can join National Park Service staff to assist with trail maintenance, litter collection, river cleanup and minor campground maintenance. Participants should meet at the Round Spring Campground Amphitheater at 10:00 AM for orientation and to select a project.  A brief program will be provided by National Park Service Rangers and representatives from state organizations. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves and a sack lunch, and to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. On Saturday evening at 6:00 PM participants will gather at the Round Spring picnic pavilion for a reception to recognize and appreciate their service for National Public Lands Day. This activity will be a great opportunity for service projects by outdoor clubs and students interested in careers with parks and conservation agencies.
