The Salem R-80 Board of Education met Thursday night for their regular meeting. Superintendent John McColloch gave an update on the middle school practice field. After leveling the area, topsoil will be added and then seeding will take place by Don Smith. New lights were installed by the steps in front of the high school, and the roof connector that leaked between the high school and middle school has been repaired. McColloch said the modular trailer at William Lynch is in the process of being moved, and the district was asked by their insurance provider to install safety straps for the retractable basketball goals. Those straps have been ordered and will cost about $4,000. McColloch also said an air conditioner was replaced at the upper elementary school. McColloch presented the board with a budget update that showed revenues down this year at 1.6 million dollars from 1.8 million last year, but the state payment has not yet been received which should produce an increase over last years revenue amount by about $80,000. Assistant Superintendent John Smith went over the State assessment results for the advanced and proficient students. He went over the year-by-year assessment from the 3rd grade through 8th providing comparisons to the state average. He said that these results cannot be accurately compared to last year because these results came from tests that were taken online for the first time ever. In the EOC results, Salem was above the state average with a score of 61.7 in English Language Arts which was 2nd in the SCA, was 1st in the SCA in Social Studies with a 79.9 score that was way over the state average, was 2nd in the SCA with a 61.5 score in Science which again was above the state average, and was 5th in the SCA in Math which was below the state average. Middle School Principal Scott Roberts presented certificates to students who did outstanding on the 2014-15 MAP Test scoring 2700 or more. Those student include: Tayton Barton in Math, Sierra Rusco, Denise Stoner, Ashley Donovan and Katrina Parks in English Language Arts; and Martin Jones in both Math and English Language Arts. 2800 is the top score possible in those subjects. High School Principal Marty Anderson reported the Student Council approved a student liaison to the Board of Education and this year it will be Josh Sirois. The board approved the bus routes for the 2015-16 school year as they are basically the same as last year and also approved the Special Education Compliance Plan prepared by DESE. The board went into closed session where no votes were taken. The meeting was adjourned.

Route A in Dent and Shannon Counties will be reduced to one lane while Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. This section of road is located from Highway 19 to County Road 5670. Weather permitting the work will take place Tuesday, September 22nd and Wednesday, September 23rd from 8:30 AM to 3 PM daily.

The Salem Tiger Football squad gave Ava all they could handle Friday night and came up just short in a 26-21 loss. Derek McClain who stepped in and ran the Wildcat offense for Salem for the first time ever, rushed for 115 yards on 33 carries, scoring twice and throwing for a touchdown to Antonio Quick. Salem falls to 2-3 on the year and they will host Willow Springs Friday night in their Homecoming game.

The Lady Softball Tigers lost to Waynesville on Friday, 7-1 before taking third place in the Norwood Tournament on Saturday. They defeated Gainesville, 10-7 before losing to Van Buren, 6-2 in bracket play. In the 3rd place game, Salem fell behind 2-0 against the Norwood Lady Pirates before scoring the last three runs of the game to take 3rd place. The Lady Tigers will host Dixon today at 4:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO, online at ksmoradio.com and watch it later on Fidelity Local 6.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at St. Clair tonight for non-conference action starting at 6:00 with the JV game with the varsity match to follow.

The Missouri Tigers slipped by the Connecticut Huskies at home in a defensive battle by the score of 9-6. Maty Mauk ran 2 yards for the only touchdown and on the strength of that play, a 1st quarter safety and an extra point, Missouri moves to 3-0 on the year. The key play of the game came with 53 seconds left in the game when the Huskies faked a game-tying field goal and opted to pass instead. Sophomore cornerback Anthony Sherrils intercepted the pass, returned it 50 yards and ultimately clinched the win for the Tigers. Missouri will be at Kentucky on Saturday.

Tommy Pham and Stephen Piscotty both homered in the first inning against Jon Lester to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 win in Chicago. Jhonny Peralta's RBI single that scored Matt Carpenter proved to be the difference. The Cubs had a great chance in the 8th to tie the game, but Justin Heyward's throw home nailed Anthony Rizzo after catching a fly ball from Addision Russell to thwart the Cubs rally. The Cardinals will be at home to host the Cincinnati Reds tonight at 6:20 on KSMO or immediately following the Salem Lady Softball game.

Kendrys Morales hit three home runs and set a franchise record with 15 total bases, and Paulo Orlando homered and doubled as the Royals pounded the Tigers, 10-3, on Sunday at Comerica Park. With the win, the Royals trimmed their magic number to clinch the American League Central to three. Morales also tripled and scored five runs. Kris Medlen went five innings and gave up three unearned runs for the victory. Danny Duffy recorded his first career save, pitching the final four innings. The Royals have the day off today.

Matt Jones ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns, an efficient Kirk Cousins avoided turnovers, and the Redskins dominated the first half, holding on to beat the St. Louis Rams 24-10. Nick Foles was 17 for 32 for 150 yards and a touchdown. The Rams are now 1-1 on the year and they will host Pittsburgh Sunday.
