The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. Randy Atchley was to speak at the meeting about the city not enforcing its own Nuisance Codes. Atchley was not in attendance, but wrote a note to the mayor about the property near SBU not being mowed. Mayor Brad Nash said he spoke with Nuisance Officer Jarred Brown about the situation. After the consent agenda was approved, City Administrator Ray Walden said he attended the MML conference with Alderwoman Kim Shelton and City Clerk Mary Happel. He said he also attended the Missouri Public Utility Alliance meeting and the group approved allowing Mountain View into the power pool starting with the contract in 2018-2028. There is no cost to the city to allow the change and it could provide better rates with more buying power. There were 5,638 participants that used the services at the Salem Community Center @The Armory in August. Walden wanted to remind citizens the city wide yard sale will be held Saturday, October 1st and there are spaces available at the city administration parking lot for $8.00 each. Call Karen Happel at 729-4811 for more information. The Fall Clean-Up Week will follow the October 3rd through the 7th on your regular pickup date and if you have questions about what can be put out during the week, call 573-762-2149. Walden wanted to thank SACBA and businesses in town for cleaning up for the MCD judges visit. Walden also said the city offices would be closed on October 10th for Columbus Day. Mayor Nash said he had been getting calls about the high grass and weeds at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Nash stated if family members place flowers, plants or reminders on the ground, it is the responsibility of the family to keep the plot clean as the city does not have the manpower to pickup those items. City Attorney Camm Seay said the city needs to look into using community service workers to help with the cemetery and the mayor said he would look into it. The board approved adopting the standard operating procedures for the outdoor warning siren activation and approved allowing the City’s coding company, General Code, to prepare an ordinance that will cover all the changes to the criminal code as passed by the state that will cost $1,195. The meeting was then adjourned.
