The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their September meeting Thursday evening. After approval of the agenda, Superintendent John McColloch updated the Board on the air conditioner/heating project at the Upper Elementary. Four new air conditioning units have been installed. He introduced Maddie Van Dien as the student liaison for the 2016/2017 school year. He then gave a brief summary of the district’s three year plan as this is only in the draft stages at this point. He would like to seek input from the staff before the plan in finalized. The main focus of the plan involves more technology updates and purchases. In new business, the Board voted to accept the bus routes, which have not changed. The Board also voted to accept the Special Education Compliance Plan. The Board set graduation for Friday, May 19th beginning at 7:00 pm. The Board voted to go into closed session where the Board voted to hire Lori Beasley for the Assistant Band Director, and Stacey Hall as a Speech Implementer. The Board then voted to accept a proposal from Donn James for the school district to reseal and re-stripe the parking lot next to William Lynch in exchange for the school district to use the parking lot for a year. The meeting was then adjourned.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 202 North Washington, beginning at 7:00 pm. During the hearing of persons, Randy Atchley would like to state his concerns about the city not enforcing nuisance codes. Following approval of the agenda, City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on various projects as well as information regarding the City of Salem followed by a report by Mayor Brad Nash. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Resolution #6-2016, a resolution adopting standard operating procedures for the City of Salem outdoor warning siren activation, which was approved by the Board at the last meeting, will be presented. In new and miscellaneous business, there has been several General Code for Offenses Chapter updates brought about by Senate Bill #491, that will need to be changed in the City Code Book. Those changes would go into effect January 1, 2017. These changes need to be approved and made by an Ordinance. The General Code will provide a 65-page sample ordinance for $1,195. After the Ordinance is adopted, the City Code Book will be updated. The Board must first approve the agreement and authorize the mayor to sign. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Route AC in Reynolds and Dent County will be reduced to one lane as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. This section of roadway is located from Route 32 to end of state maintenance. Weather permitting the work will take place today through Thursday, September 22nd from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of August. During the month, they wrote three equipment repair orders, 32 summons to appear in court, eight warning tickets, and 25 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 15 accidents, one burglary, one report of child molestation, one report of a city nuisance defined as panhandling, one report of disorderly conduct, three reports of domestic assaults, three reports of domestic violence, five reports of driving while intoxicated, six reports of driving while having a license revoked and/or suspended, one report of endangering the welfare of a child, one report of failure to obey a lawful order of the police, one report of forgery, one report of fraudulent use of a credit and/or debit device, and three reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated one report of a lost and/or stolen license plate, one report of a minor in possession of intoxicants, one report of passing bad checks, five reports of property damage, one report of a recovered stolen car, two reports of resisting and/or interfering with an arrest, 11 reports of stealing, one report of supplying liquor to a minor, and one report for a 96-hour commitment. They also investigated one report of possession of amphetamine, three reports of possession of marijuana and three reports of possession of drug paraphernalia.  The police department received 1,232 calls for service during the month, handled 151 walk-ins to the station, redirected 61 calls to the animal control officer and conducted one death investigation. They spent 14 hours in court testifying and four hours as court bailiff. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,284 miles and arrested 34 males and 18 females during the month of August.

Quincy McDonald of the Ava Bears scored on back-to-back interception returns in the 3rd quarter to help lead Ava to a 38-0 win over Salem Saturday afternoon after the game Friday night was postponed due to storms in the area. Kelly McDonald scored three TD’s on one-yard runs for Ava as the Bears defense totally shut down Salem and forced four turnovers in the 2nd half. Salem is now 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the SCA Conference. They will be at Willow Springs Friday night at 7:00 in SCA play.

The Salem Lady Softball Game with Waynesville Friday was postponed due to rain. The Lady Tigers will be in Dixon today at 4:30. Salem is 10-1 on the year.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host St. Clair tonight at the SHS Gym starting with the JV game at 6:00 with the varsity match to follow. Salem is 4-9 going into the match.

Alex Reyes pitched seven dominant innings in his third major league start, fellow rookie Aledmys Diaz hit a two-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals moved up in the tight NL wild-card race, blanking the San Francisco Giants 3-0 on Sunday. Reyes gave up four hits, striking out six with two walks. The 22-year-old righty's fastball was consistently in the mid-to-upper 90s mph range. Seung Hwan Oh pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save. The Cardinals closed within one game of San Francisco for the second wild card spot and they start a three game set in Colorado tonight at 6:45 on KSMO Radio.

Kendrys Morales homered for his 1,000th career hit and drove in four runs, Danny Duffy pitched effectively into the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 10-3 Sunday. Eric Hosmer drove in three runs, giving him a career-best 95 RBIs. Whit Merrifield had three hits and two RBIs. The White Sox will be at Kansas City for an afternoon match up today.

Jacob Eason threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah McKenzie on fourth down with 1:31 seconds to play to give No. 16 Georgia a 28-27 victory over Missouri on Saturday night in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams. The Tigers (1-2) turned the ball over five times, including four in the second half. Missouri's Drew Lock was 23 of 38 for 376 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Missouri will be hosting Delaware State Saturday afternoon at 3:00.

Funeral services for Marie Bottorff of Salem, age 95, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Animal Shelter.
