The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done and a crossover pipe installed as well as ditch work performed on Dent County Road 5020, and grading only would be done on county roads 5610, 6040, 6110 and 6570. Purcell went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6320 and a man would be putting a hydraulic line on backhoe #7. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done and materials added to Dent County Road 3260, while grading only would be done on county roads 2120, 3295 and 3305. Larson said brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4030 and the back window on tractor #6 would be replaced after being broken due to vandalism. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Salem Area Community Betterment Association meeting Monday afternoon in preparation of the Missouri Community Betterment judges being in town on Tuesday. Skiles stated he and Commissioner Larson attended the presentation Tuesday afternoon SACBA made for the judges at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center. On Wednesday, Skiles noted he and Commissioner Purcell attended the Dent County Industrial Development Authority meeting, and Thursday, Skiles attended and assisted 3rd graders from the all the rural schools as well as Salem R-80 at Dent County Beef Days at The Commons. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that bills were being approved. At 10:00 AM, bids were opened for the surplus sale of two Dent County Sheriff Department cars. Schwartz Salvage was the highest bidder with a bid of $765.00 for each vehicle and the Commission voted 3-0 to accept the bids. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving utility theft, a shoplifter, a burglary and an assault. On Tuesday afternoon, September 8th at 2:00, an officer was contacted in reference to utility theft. The investigation of the report revealed the tenant of a residence was using electric from another residence. Further investigation led to the arrest of a 34-year old Salem male for stealing utilities. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Thursday morning, September 10th at 7:43, an officer was sent to Country Mart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation revealed a 15-year old male juvenile of Salem, took merchandise valued at $78.21. He was taken into custody for stealing and was later released to his mother. The report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. Later that same day at 1:20, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 300 block of South Missouri in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed a person or persons unknown forcibly entered a residence through a window and took a 32-inch flat screen television valued at $203.00. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Missouri Department of Revenue announced the local sales tax rate changes in the City of Salem and in Dent County that will go into effect October 1, 2015. Dent County has imposed a 0.25% (1/4 of 1%) increase in sales tax for road and bridge improvements and maintenance. There is a sunset to this tax in 2022. The total sales tax rate will then be 5.475% in Dent County. The City of Salem has also imposed a 0.375% (3/8 of 1%) increase in sales tax for improvements and upkeep to the city park system. The total sales tax rate will be 7.350% for the City of Salem. Both of the tax rate increases were voted on by the people in the City of Salem and in Dent County during the Municipal Election held back in April.

There is good news for older Missourians needing help to reenter the workforce in Dent County. A local non-profit has openings in a program that offers training and other services as a stepping-stone to employment. The Experience Works Missouri state office, a national non-profit organization, operates the Department of Labor’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) in 102 Missouri counties. The program provides paid community service assignments at local and public non-profit organizations It also provides free training, referral to needed services, and job search assistance. The program is available to people age 55 and older who are unemployed and meet other criteria. The Salem Football Tigers will be in Ava tonight to face the Bears in SCA play. Salem is 1-1 in the SCA and 2-2 on the season. You can hear the game on KSMO radio and online at ksmoradio.com. (Update: Salem lost, 26-21)

The Lady Softball Tigers traveled to Steelville to face the Lady Cardinals on Thursday night. Salem would score early and often, scoring in every inning en route to a 16-2 victory in five innings. After two innings of play Salem led 5-2 and would break things open with six runs in the third inning. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers are now 7-4 and they will host Waynesville this afternoon at 4:30 in non-conference play and then participate in the Norwood Tournament on Saturday. (Update: Salem lost to Waynesville, 7-1, then took 3rd place in the Norwood Tournament)

The Missouri Football Tigers will host the University of Connecticut Saturday morning at 11:00. Missouri is 2-0 going into the contest. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio. (Update: Missouri won, 9-6)

John Lackey pitched seven shutout innings and the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals beat Milwaukee 6-3 Thursday night in a game delayed after Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson was hit in the head by a line drive. Tommy Pham tripled, doubled and singled, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Matt Carpenter got three hits, including a home run. Lackey (12-9) scattered five hits and two walks while striking out eight. He has a 2.23 ERA in his last 17 starts dating to June 15. The Cardinals start a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs today at 1:20 on KSMO Radio.

Omar Infante drove in a career-high seven runs and the Kansas City Royals overcame some early sloppiness for an 8-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night. Omar Infante, hit a three-run homer in the second inning off Corey Kluber (8-14), added a two-run double in the fifth after the Indians pulled their ace and a two-run single in the seventh. The Royals play the Detroit Tigers tonight at 6:10

Funeral services for Willard Wesley Pyatt of Salem, age 81, was held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Carty Cemetery or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Graveside service for Ms. Ann McCallum of Success, age 79, was held Saturday morning at 11:00 at Concord Cemetery north of Licking on Route C. All arrangements are under direction of the Fox Funeral Home, Licking, MO. 

Funeral services for Edith F. Roper of Licking, age 98, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah Witness in Licking. Visitation will be at 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Licking City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Ina Carey of Steelville, age 71, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Steelville First Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Thomas Cash of St. James, age 82, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00. Interment will be in the Concord Cemetery in Maples, MO with Military Honors.

Funeral services for Arthur Wadlow of Desoto, Missouri, age 83, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Charles Elmer Butler of Salem, age 74, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday evening. A Special Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 Monday night. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
