The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of August. During the month, they wrote one equipment repair order, 17 summons to appear in court, 17 warning tickets, and 40 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 13 accidents, three assaults, two burglaries, one city curfew violation, one report of disorderly conduct, two reports of domestic assault, six reports of domestic violence, four reports of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while driving revoked and/or suspended, one report of forgery, and two reports of a minor in possession of intoxicants. The department also investigated one report of a missing and/or runaway juvenile, one report of a peace disturbance, three reports of property damage, one report of resisting and/or interfering with an arrest, one report of statutory rape, 12 reports of stealing, and one violation of an expartee and/or full order of protection. They also investigated one report of distributing/delivering /manufacturing/producing/possession of a controlled substance, one report of possession of amphetamine, one report of possession of benzodazephine, one report of possession of heroin, one report of possession of marijuana, one report of possession of opium or derivative, and five reports of possession of drug paraphernalia. The Salem Police Department also conducted one death investigation during the month. The police department received 1,604 calls for service during the month, handled 133 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 78 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 20 hours in court testifying, and five hours as court bailiff. The calls in August included 10 calls for escorts, three calls for an intoxicated driver, one call for a prowler, nine calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, four intoxicated pedestrian calls, 14 calls for domestic disputes, and ten calls for a wrecker. There were three 911 calls, four calls for a peace disturbance, nine calls for alarms sounding, four calls for fights in progress, 15 ambulance assist calls, one call for drag racing and/or a speeding vehicle, three fire calls and three calls for property damage. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 7,660 miles and arrested 17 males and 10 females during the month of August.

Online hunter education registration to receive your Missouri hunter certification is now available for people that will be held in Rolla at RTI. If you plan to hunt during a Missouri firearms season or you are acting as an adult mentor, you MUST first complete an approved hunter-education certification program and provide proof of completion UNLESS you are 15 years or younger and will be hunting with a properly permitted adult mentor 18 years of age or older, you received a disability exemption from Missouri Department of Conservation’s Protection Division, you were born before January 1st, 1967, or you are the landowner or lessee hunting on land you own or upon which you reside. The skills session of the education will be held in Rolla at RTI on Tuesday, September 29th and Wednesday, the 30th; Monday, October 5th and also Wednesday, October 7th. The skills session will also be in Salem at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory on Friday, October 9th and Monday, October 12th.  All classes will be held from 5:30 to 9:30. All those interested MUST have completed the knowledge portion before they can take the skills portion. To complete the knowledge part of the education, a person can take the online course for $15 that is payable to the online provider, or you can order a study guide online and fill out the questions in the back of the study guide and bring it with you to the skills course. An accident occurred Tuesday morning at 8:00 in Johnson County on eastbound US 50 east of Northwest 751st Road. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1999 Kenworth driven by 55-year old Clinton Hodges of Salem was eastbound when he traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail. The Kenworth continued eastbound, ran off the roadway, struck a highway signpost and struck a ditch and then overturned. Hodges suffered minor injuries and refused treatment on the scene. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Kenworth sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Don’s Towing.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be in Houston today at 4:00 for a make-up game due to the rainout on September 8th. There will only be a varsity game today. Salem is 5-4 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers went 1-3 in the Cabool Tournament held Saturday. Salem beat Thayer by the scores of 25-14 and 25-21, then lost to Bunker and Cabool in pool play before losing again to Bunker in bracket play. Leading the Lady Tigers in the tournament were Breanna Piatt with 13 kills, 9 service aces and two blocks, Makayla Cahill with 18 assists and a block, Kirsten Golden with 6 digs, and Faith Roberts with 2 blocks.

Jason Heyward hit a line drive two-run homer in the 10th inning to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. Kevin Siegrist (7-1) pitched the ninth and Trevor Rosenthal the 10th for his 44th save. Matt Carpenter led off the 10th and reached on an error on by first baseman Adam Lind. With one out, Heyward connected off Tyler Thornburg (0-2) for his 12th homer. The Cardinals play the Brewers tonight at 7:10 on KSMO Radio.

Kansas City's Kris Medlen allowed five hits over 6 1-3 innings and Alex Rios connected for a home run off Josh Tomlin that launched some unintentional fireworks, leading the Royals to a 2-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night. The Royals won for just the third time in 11 games and moved a little closer to wrapping up an AL Central title. The Royals play the Indians tonight at 6:10.

Funeral services for Robert Hiam of St. James, age 85, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park in St. Louis today at 3:00 with full military honors.

Funeral services for Drusilla Adeline (Fowler) Gray of Salem, age 73, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Green Forest Cemetery.

Funeral services for Willard Wesley Pyatt of Salem, age 81, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Carty Cemetery or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Graveside service for Ms. Ann McCallum of Success, age 79, will be Saturday at 11:00 AM at Concord Cemetery north of Licking on Route C. All arrangements are under direction of the Fox Funeral Home, Licking, MO. 

Funeral services for Edith F. Roper of Licking, age 98, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah Witness in Licking. Visitation will be at 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Licking City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
