Feed Dent County, a collaboration between Dent County healthcare providers, nutrition education and food access organizations, concerned community groups and Home State Health, will announce this afternoon the first project in their effort to fight chronic disease in Dent County. The celebration of the new cooler/freezer system for the Shepherd’s Nook Food Pantry will take place between 1:00-3:00 PM at the food pantry, which is located at the Lifeway Center located at 701 N. Main in Salem. Numerous community leaders and dignitaries have been invited to speak including Bill Stack from the Shepherd's Nook Food Pantry, SMDH Administrator Kasey Lucas, Administrator Jane Jadwin from the Dent County Health Center, Sherry Lea who is the Executive Director of the Healthy Dent County, and others. Also invited but not guaranteed to attend are Congressman Jason Smith, State Senator Dan Brown and State Representative Jeff Pogue plus Salem City Council members and the Dent County Commission.

The Salem Police Department has released reports on recent incidents. On Monday August 29th at 5:55 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to Fourth Street and Highway 19 in reference to a subject requesting money from passing motorists. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 51-year old Salem male for panhandling. The subject was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Later that evening at 9:10, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 30 year-old Salem male for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Tuesday August 30th at 12:35 in the afternoon, an officer located a red 2005 Dodge Neon parked in the Wal-Mart parking lot. The Neon had been reported stolen from Lamar, Missouri. The vehicle was towed and was released to the Lamar Police Department for further investigation. On Wednesday August 31st at 12:37 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Country Mart in reference to check fraud. That investigation revealed a suspect who was captured on video cashed a fictitious check on a nonexistent account in the amount of $286.96. At 1:22 that same afternoon, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 500 block of East Center in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a residence and took a flat screen television and a cell phone valued at $2,614.38. At 2:21 that afternoon, an officer made contact with a 29-year old male of Salem at the Police Station while conducting a theft investigation. During the investigation, it was found that the suspect being questioned had an active arrest warrant from Vernon County, Missouri. The suspect was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending extradition. At 7:31 that evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 35-year old Salem male for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their September meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent John McColloch will update the Board with a facilities update, the Board will pick a student liaison and the Board will address the three year district plan. Principals from the respective buildings will give their reports on various happenings at each of the buildings. In new business, the Board will approve bus routes, a Special Education Compliance Plan and approve a Graduation date. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The September meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 2:45 Tuesday afternoon in Phelps County on Highway 68 at Highway V about a mile north of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country driven by 70-year old Garlen Pyatt of St. James and was traveling southbound on highway 68. The Chrysler Town and Country traveled into the path of a 2007 Lincoln MKZ driven by 30-year old Leslee Pankey of St. James. Pankey suffered minor injuries and was transported by the St. James ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both the Chrysler Town and Country and the Lincoln MKZ sustained extensive damage and were towed by Spurgeon’s Towing.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers defeated Cuba Wednesday by the score of 8-3 to go to 9-1 on the year. Bekah Kirker went 2-3 with a double and an RBI while Shaylee Harrison went 1-4 with a triple and three RBI. The Lady Tigers will host Dora today at 4:30 on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host Mountain View tonight starting at 6:00 with the JV game with the varsity match to follow. Salem is 4-8 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA.

The Salem Cross Country Team will be in the Steelville Invitational Tournament starting at 4:00 for their first meet.

Anthony Rizzo hit a pair of home runs and Jon Lester pitched eight dominant innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-0. St. Louis starter Carlos Martinez (14-8) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings. The Cardinals will be in San Francisco to start a four game series beginning tonight at 8:20 on KSMO.

Yonder Alonso and Marcus Semien hit two-run doubles as the Oakland Athletics beat Kansas City 8-0 for the third straight win on Wednesday night. The 2015 World Series champion Royals are five games out in the American League wild card with 17 games. These two teams will finish out their four game series in Kansas City tonight.

Funeral services for Lois Jean “Jeannie” Lamar of Rolla, age 84, will be held today at 11:00 at the Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Good Samaritan Fund. All arrangements are under the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Howard Marvin Happel of Salem, age 87, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Grace Community Church Youth Program.

Graveside services for Maxine Dobbs Bowls of O’Fallon, Illinois, age 88, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Lois May Braidlow of Rolla, age 81, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Anutt Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Anutt Cemetery or the Anutt School.

Funeral services for Alma Jean Brown of Steelville, age 91, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
