The Dent County Commission met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the paperwork for the quarterly Senior Citizen Fund transfer of $20,750. The commissioners signed off on the transfer. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done and materials added to Dent County Road 6470, and grading only would be done on county road 5615. He also said brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 6070 and 6500, and a man will be going to Springfield for a load of oil for chip and seal repair on various roads today. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Road 2330 while brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4010 and 4330. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said the Community Betterment Judges would be in be in town today starting out at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Main at 1:45. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported she attended the annual county clerk and election authority meeting. She said that Secretary of State Jason Kander indicated the state is going to allocate three million dollars to election authorities of which $2 million would go for new election equipment and the other $1 million would go toward helping communities comply with the Helping America Vote Act, also known as HAVA. Curley said she was elected President of the South Central County Clerk Region and will continue to serve on the scholarship committee. At 10:00, bids were opened to dispose of surplus property. The amount of money raised from the sale of surplus property for General Revenue was $539.76; another $181.02 for the Assessor’s office surplus property, and the Road and Bridge Department surplus property brought $1,812.66. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol joins the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Ad Council, and other safety advocates to commemorate National Child Passenger Safety Week (September 13th-19th). The primary goal of this program is to remind all parents and other adults responsible for children traveling in motor vehicles of the importance of child safety seats and seat belts. Every year, children suffer needless injuries. Preliminary statistics indicate that in 2014, 17 children under the age of eight were killed in traffic crashes, and another 1,578 were injured. Troopers issued citations to 2,143 drivers who failed to secure children less than eight years old in a child restraint/booster seat in 2014. Troopers issued citations to an additional 301 drivers who failed to secure a child 80 pounds or more or over 4’9” in a seat belt in 2014.

The 3rd Annual Smokin’ Hot Veterans Rib Cook Off was held this past Saturday, September 12th at the American Legion Hall on Highway 72 West. The Sons of the American Legion furnished the ribs for the Cook-Off. There were individual as well as commercial entries for the Cook Off. The winners in the individual category were Clint Medlock who earned 1st place, taking 2nd place was Jason Blankenship and the 3rd place winner was Travis Fulton. The winners for the commercial entries were in 1st place T. Fulton Construction, taking 2nd place was DC Machine and the winner for commercial entries for 3rd place was Jayson “Wally” Headrick. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all those who participated in the Cook Off.

The University of Missouri Extension will be offering their “Cooking Matters at the Store” program at the Country Mart in Salem on Monday, September 21st and September 28th. This program is a guided grocery store tour to help families buy healthy, affordable food. Participants will learn how to buy fruits, and vegetables on a budget, compare unit prices to find bargains, read and compare food labels, identify whole grains and stick to a budget. At the conclusion of the tour, participants will receive a $10 gift card to purchase healthy items, a free workbook with tasty recipes and handy tips on buying healthy, low-cost foods, and a free reusable grocery bag. “Cooking Matters at the Store” is free, but registration is required. Participants can choose between two times on both days. One tour will be held from 10:00 AM to noon and the other tour will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Space is limited. The Carson & Barnes Circus will be in Salem on today with two shows of two hours of fun, excitement and pageantry for children of all ages. See elephants, horses, ponies and dogs perform amazing tricks and be amazed and thrilled by the extraordinary artists from around the world. Come out early and watch the elephants being washed before the show at 3:30 in the afternoon. The Carson & Barnes Circus will be at the Dent County Commons on Highway 72 from 4:30 & 7:30 pm today and tonight. General admission is $16 for adults, and $10 for children age 2 to 11 years of age; reserved seats are $18 for adults and $12 for children while the box seats are $22 for adults and $16 per child. Lap children under the age of 2 are free in all sections.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers split their four games this past weekend in the Potosi Tournament. The Lady Tigers started out the day pounding Potosi by the score of 18-0, then lost to Jefferson by the score of 9-1. The Lady Tigers then fell behind 4-0 to St. Clair only to score then next 16 runs and beat the Lady Bulldogs, 16-4. In the final game of the day, the Lady Tigers fell behind 8-0 to Van Buren before they finally got on the board, but it was too little too late. The Lady Tigers lost by the final of 14-6. Camryn Pryor went 7-14 for the tournament with 8 RBI and two doubles, and Payton Curley went 5-12 including a double and triple, 3 RBI and seven runs scored. Salem is now 5-4 on the year and they will have a busy week as the Lady Tiger game with Houston has been rescheduled for Wednesday at 4:00 in a varsity only contest at Houston. The regular scheduled games include Steelville on Thursday at 4:30 at Steelville before the Lady Tigers come home to face Waynesville Friday at 4:30. To wrap up the week, the Lady Tigers will participate in the Norwood Tournament on Saturday. This tournament replaces the Houston Tournament that was rained out at the beginning of the year.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Mountain View-Liberty tonight to face the Lady Eagles in SCA play. This is Salem’s first SCA match of the year and it will start at 6:00 with the JV contest with the varsity match to follow.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off and they will be in Milwaukee to face the Brewers starting at 6:15 tonight on KSMO with the pre-game show and the game time is 7:10. The Cardinals are 3-7 in their last ten games.

Carlos Carrasco overcame a home run on his first pitch of the game to throw six strong innings, and Lonnie Chisenhall drove in three runs as the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 8-3 on Monday night. The Royals will play the Cleveland Indians tonight at 6:10.

Funeral services for Susie Blanton of Steelville, age 64, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery in Steelville.

Funeral services for Robert Hiam of St. James, age 85, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park in St. Louis Wednesday at 3:00 with full military honors.

Funeral services for Drusilla Adeline (Fowler) Gray, of Salem, age 73, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Green Forest Cemetery.

Graveside service for Ms. Ann McCallum of Success, age 79, will be Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Concord Cemetery north of Licking on Route C. All arrangements are under direction of the Fox Funeral Home, Licking, MO.  

Funeral services for Edith F. Roper of Licking, age 98, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah Witness in Licking. Visitation will be at 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Licking City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
