On Thursday, September 8th at 8:00 in the morning, the Salem Police Department detailed officers to 1508 Highway 19 South to Pizza Inn in Salem for the report of a burglary. The initial investigation revealed that an unknown person had entered the business at about 3:20 early that morning by breaking into the back door. The back door and the office door were both damaged and $2,200 in cash was stolen. After further investigation into the report, 34-year old Ralph E. Scott of Salem was arrested and is currently incarcerated at the Dent County Jail on charges of felony burglary in the 2nd degree, persistent offender and felony stealing with a bond of $50,000 cash.

An accident occurred on Friday morning at 8:45 on Interstate 44 about two miles east of St. James that took the lives of a man from Rolla and a woman from Texas. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer driven by 55-year old Clifford Valley of Rolla was traveling westbound on Interstate 44 when he ran off the left side of the roadway and overcorrected which caused the vehicle to leave the right side of the roadway and overturn. Valley, the driver, was ejected and pronounced dead at Phelps County Regional Medical Center. A passenger, 57-year old Carla Doss, was pronounced dead at the scene by Phelps County Coroner Davis. Two passengers, 9-year old Montana Valley and 13-year old Patrick Valley, both suffered serious injuries and were transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield by Air Ambulance. Another passenger, 12-year old Leighlana Valley, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield by St. James ambulance. One other passenger, 15-year old Dakota Valley, suffered minor injuries and was released to a family member to seek his own treatment. The Mountaineer was totaled and towed by Spurgeon’s Towing. It is unknown at this time if everyone was wearing a safety device. 

An accident occurred on Friday morning at 1:56 in the morning on I-44 about six miles west of Rolla that took the life of a man from Osceola, Missouri. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Pontiac Montana Van driven by 33-year old Ivy Stevens of Osceola was traveling eastbound on I-44 when she lost control and traveled into the path of a 2001 Freightliner. The Freightliner struck the van, then the van struck a guard rail and came to rest in the roadway. A passenger in the van, 18-year old Tyler Earl of Osceola, was pronounced dead at 2:08 that morning by Phelps County Coroner Andy Davis and the body was transported to James and Gahr Funeral Home. Another passenger, seven-year old Patrick Stevens, suffered moderate injuries and was transported by Phelps County ambulance to Phelps County Hospital and then transferred to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. The van was totaled and taken from the scene by Dishman’s Towing of Rolla. The Freightliner had moderate damages and was driven from the scene.

An accident occurred on Thursday evening at 8:46 on I-44 at mile marker 186.4 took the life of a man from Hanford, California. According to the highway patrol report, a 2015 Kenworth driven by 44-year old Manuel Lara of Hanford, California was traveling westbound on I-44 when he lost control and struck a concrete barrier, overturned, slid across the road and struck the guardrail. Manuel Lara was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:51 that evening by Phelps County Coroner Andy Davis and the body was transported to Null and Son Funeral Home. The Kenworth was totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing.

On Thursday, September 8th at 2:30 in the afternoon, an accident occurred in Crawford on Highway 19 about six miles south of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Ford F-250 driven by 63-year old Thomas Mabe of Steelville was traveling northbound on highway 19 and traveled off the left side of the roadway. The Ford struck a fence and overturned. Mabe suffered moderate injuries and was transported by the Steelville ambulance to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. He was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Ford F-250 was totaled and removed from the scene by Miles and Sons Towing.

Trailing 7-0 at halftime on a Zac Eplin’s 13-yard late 1st half touchdown run, the Thayer Bobcats made some offensive adjustments and picked off two Salem passes in the 2nd half to comeback and beat Salem, 14-7. Eplin finished with 114 yards rushing on 24 carries. Salem finished the game with three turnovers and fall to 3-1 on the year and 1-1 in the SCA. The Tigers will host the Ava Bears Friday night.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers tournament at Potosi scheduled for this past weekend was postponed and rescheduled for September 23rd and 24th. The Lady Tigers will host Steelville tomorrow afternoon.  Salem is 7-1 on the year.

Ryan Braun hit a solo home run in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat St. Louis 2-1 Sunday, dropping the Cardinals back in the NL wild-card race. The Cardinals are a half-game behind the Mets for the second wild-card slot. Braun connected off Kevin Siegrist (5-3) for his 27th homer of the season. St. Louis had tied it in the eighth when Matt Carpenter doubled and scored on Stephen Piscotty's sacrifice fly off Tyler Thornburg (6-5). The Cards start a three game series with the Cubs beginning at 6:20 tonight on KSMO Radio.

Ian Kennedy and three relievers combined on a two-hitter, and the Kansas City Royals beat Chris Sale and the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Sunday. Kendrys Morales homered on Sale's first pitch of the second and Eric Hosmer did the same in the fourth. The Royals won their second straight to stay four games behind Baltimore for the final AL wild-card spot. Kennedy (11-9) walked four, but Adam Eaton's leadoff single was the only hit off the right-hander in six innings. He improved to 5-0 in his last six starts. The Royals will host Oakland tonight.

Alex Smith dived for a touchdown on the first possession of overtime, completing the Kansas City Chiefs' frantic rally from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the San Diego Chargers 33-27 in their season opener Sunday. Smith threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns, the second a back-shoulder fade to Jeremy Maclin with just over nine minutes left in the fourth quarter that trimmed the Chiefs' deficit to 27-17. Cairo Santos kicked a 33-yard field goal a few minutes later, and after forcing a three-and-out, Spencer Ware finished off a four-play drive with a touchdown plunge to knot it at 27. Kansas City will be at Houston Sunday.

Drew Lock tied a school-record with five touchdown passes as Missouri ran away with its home opener, defeating Eastern Michigan 61-21 Saturday night. Lock completed 24 of 37 pass attempts for 450 yards, just 30 yards shy of the school record. The Tigers (1-1) amassed 647 yards of total offense, the most since Sept. 17, 2011. Running backs Demarea Crockett and Ish Witter combined for 25 rushes, 129 yards and two touchdowns. Ray Wingo led Missouri in receiving yards with 125 on just three catches, including a 52-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter. Johnathon Johnson caught five passes for 115 yards and a touchdown, and Emmanuel Hall had three catches for 90 yards. Missouri will host Georgia Saturday evening at 6:30.

Funeral services for Bradley H. Taylor, age 61, of Cuba will be today at 5:00 PM at Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, with full military honors. Visitation will be from 3:00-5:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made out to the Cuba VFW Post #7174.

Funeral services for Gloria Jean Harmon of Steelville, age 70, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Tuesday.

Funeral services for Lois Jean “Jeannie” Lamar of Rolla, age 84, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Louis. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Good Samaritan Fund. All arrangements are under the James and Ghar Mortuary in Rolla.
