An accident occurred at 7:40 Thursday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about four miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle driven by 47-year old Ona Young of Salem pulled out of a driveway into the path of a 1994 Jeep Cherokee driven by 45-year old Steven Thompson of Salem traveling southbound on Highway 19. Young suffered serious injuries and taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by EMS. Passengers in the Jeep, 13-year old Kalyn Thompson and 8-year old Regan Thompson suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Volkswagen Beetle and the Jeep Cherokee were both totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Midwest Blue Oval Club presents the Current River Blue Oval Rally Saturday around the Dent County Courthouse. There is a $20 entry fee and ALL cars and trucks are welcome to enter the rally. Registration for the rally and the arts and crafts begin at 8:00 in the morning, plus there will live music during the show from Highway 32 Bluegrass and the Second Time Around Band. There will also be games for the kids to play for FREE with the awards being presented at 2:00. All the monies raised will benefit the Love Pack Backpack Program, Salem High School Band Parents, Shepherd’s Nook Food Pantry and the Scholarship That Rocks. There will also be a town cruise starting at 6:00 Saturday night from the Crossroads.

The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams came in with the sales tax numbers for the commission. She said the sales tax received in September for the Road and Bridge Department came in at $42,309.73 and year-to-date, the sales taxes received for the Road and Bridge Department has come to $292,058.89. Also, the sales tax received in September for General Revenue came in at $89,328.49 which is almost $12,500 more than in September of 2015. The sales tax received so far this year for General Revenue is $32,431.18 more than in 2015 which comes to a 5.40% increase. Williams also presented to the commission a request for the quarterly transfer of funds from the Senior Citizen Fund to the holding account to be distributed to the Salem Nutrition Center and for the SMTS bus service. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done on Dent County Road 6280 while hand patching will be done these chip and seal roads: Dent County Roads 2400 and 4180, and possibly county road 6300 if time and weather permits. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2020 and 2025, while materials would be added and grading done on county road 4380. Larson did say brush would be cut on county road 2240. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said absentee voting for the General Election in November will begin on September 27th and the last day to register to vote in the General Election will be October 12th. She mentioned she balanced with the treasurer on all accounts for August, and the Assessor and Collector balanced on all collections, add-ons and abatements. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Fifteen people died in traffic crashes during the 2016 Labor Day holiday weekend. Last year, there were 10 fatalities. The 2016 counting period for the Labor Day holiday ran from 6:00 Friday night, September 2nd, through 11:59 Monday night, September 5th. During the 2016 counting period, the Patrol investigated 299 traffic crashes, which included 108 injuries and 14 fatalities. Troopers made 91 arrests for driving while intoxicated and 119 drug arrests in 2016. There were zero boating fatalities over the 2016 Labor Day holiday. Troopers investigated 15 boating crashes involving 10 injuries. Troopers arrested 11 people for boating while intoxicated and made 25 drug arrests on the state’s rivers and lakes. There were three drownings reported last year.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers game with Cuba Thursday was postponed due to the rain. Also, the Potosi Softball Tournament scheduled for today and Saturday has been rescheduled for September 23rd and 24th due to the rain.  

The Salem Football Tigers will travel to Thayer to face the Bobcats in SCA play starting at 7:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com starting at 6:30 with Tiger Talk and Coach Brian McNamee. Salem enters the game with a 3-0 record ands 1-0 in the SCA Conference.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers fell to the Licking Lady Wildcats in three games Thursday night. Salem lost the first game, 22-25; won Game 2, 25-23; and lost the third game 21-25. Salem is now 1-5 on the year. They will be in the eight team Cabool Tournament on Saturday.

Domingo Santana and Orlando Arcia hit back-to-back homers as the Milwaukee Brewers routed the St. Louis Cardinals 12-5 on Thursday night. Hernan Perez had four hits and three RBIs for the Brewers. The Cardinals fell to 30-38 at home and dropped a half game behind the idle New York Mets for the second wild card spot. The Cards and Brewers play tonight on a delayed basis at about 9:20 on KSMO Radio.

Kansas City was off Thursday and they will be in Chicago to face the White Sox tonight to start a three game set.

The Missouri Tigers will host Eastern Michigan Saturday evening at 6:30. Missouri enters the game with an 0-1 record.

Funeral services for Sydney E. Brown, age 85, of St. James will be Saturday afternoon at 3:00 at the St. James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be at 1:00 Saturday afternoon until service time at the Chapel. Interment will be at the St. James Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made out to the Assistance League of the Missouri Veterans Home in St. James.

Funeral services for Bradley H. Taylor, age 61, of Cuba will be Monday at 5:00 PM at Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, with full military honors. Visitation will be from 3:00-5:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made out to the Cuba VFW post #7174.
