The City of Salem Board of Aldermen met Tuesday evening for their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers. The board approved the request from the Salem United Methodist Church to close Doss Road on Halloween from 5:00 to 8:00 PM for their “Trunk or Treat” event, and they approved the closing of the 600 block of South Water Street for a community outreach event on September 20th from 9:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening and also Halloween from 4:00 to 9:00 PM for their “Trunk or Treat” event. The board went on to approve the closing of Iron, 4th and 5th Streets around the courthouse for the Current River Blue Oval Rally this Saturday from 9:00 in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon. They also approved closing 4th Street from Washington to Highway 19 for the car show. City Administrator Ray Walden said the city has looked at and is now working on a solution to the stormwater that comes over the sidewalk at the Revival Tabernacle Church. The board approved the closing of 4th Street at 407 East 4th Street for a Masters of Peace Clinic Fund Raiser and the 5k Pumpkin Run on October 10th. The board approved the low bid from Dave Sinclair Ford in St. Louis for a 2016 F-750 Diesel Base Regular Cab for $55,812. A dump truck bed is to be installed at a later time. The board approved the bid from Donelson Construction Company from Clever, Missouri for the Modified Aggregate Quick Set priced at $3.68 per square yard for micro-paving. The streets to be treated are not yet determined. City Administrator Walden said the invitation letters to people to consider voluntary annexation into the Salem City Limits have been sent. He has received no responses to date, but those people have until the end of the month to respond. Walden said a meeting would be held Thursday morning at 11:00 concerning the MoDOT grant for the airport at the City Administrator’s Office. Walden stated the Missouri Community Betterment Judges would be in town at ONCRC on September 15th reminding people to welcome the judges. Walden told the board the Park Board would be meeting on Thursday, July 24th at noon at the Salem Community Center @ The Armory with the Board of Aldermen meeting scheduled for 7:00 that same night. Mayor J.J. Tune reviewed some accomplishments made since he became mayor such as the passing of the Park and Recreation Sales Tax, raising the water and sewer rates to help make those funds self-sufficient. Tune took no credit himself on getting these things accomplished, but stated this is part of what he promised would be done when he ran for mayor. He said people should support the local economy and buy local whenever it is possible. Tune said he would be developing a Salem Area Economic Task Force to see what can be done to help with the development of small industries that reflect today’s technology. The board approved Bill #3300 that repealed the sections in the city ordinance concerning overtime pay for city employees; approved Bill #3301 that annexed the Hedley property into the city limits; approved Bill#3302 that allowed the municipal court in Salem to comply with Senate Bill #5 relating to penalties, court procedures and speeding violations; and Bill #3303 that allows Fireworks to be set off in the city on the 4th of July and also during home Salem Tiger Football games. Mayor J.J. Tune wanted to appoint Tod Kinerk to the Planning and Zoning Commission to replace Mike Condray who resigned. The board postponed any action until the next meeting providing Kinerk resigns from the Board of Adjustment to replace Condray. The board approved sending City Clerk Mary Happel to the annual LAGERS meeting October 29th and 30th in St. Louis along with an employee representative. The board agreed to hold the Fall Clean-Up Week from October 5th through the 9th. The board then went into closed session.

The Salem Lady Tigers softball game with Houston was postponed Tuesday due to wet grounds. No makeup date was announced. The Lady Tigers will host Cuba Thursday afternoon at 4:30.

Former St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Joaquin Andujar passed away yesterday in the Dominican Republic due to complications from diabetes at the age of 62. He was a 20 game winner in 1984 and 1985 for the Cardinals.

Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo homered and combined for seven RBIs and the Chicago Cubs earned their fifth straight win, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 8-5 in the middle game of a three-game series on Tuesday night. St. Louis was down 8-0 and had been outscored 24-1 over three games before pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk sparked a five-run seventh with a two-run homer estimated at 451 feet into Big Mac Land in the seventh. The Cardinals play the Cubs today at 12:45 on KSMO Radio.

Eric Hosmer hit a three-run double and Kendrys Morales added an RBI double in the first inning, and that was all Volquez (13-7) and the Kansas City bullpen needed. The Royals had a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. The Royals play the Twins tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Dennis Phillip Stephenson of Rolla, age 75, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be at the Missouri State Veteran’s Cemetery in Waynesville with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the VFW Post #2025.

Funeral services for John J. Davis of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, age 77, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from noon until service time on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Marie (Barton) Brooks of Salem, age 81, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 tonight. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral Services for Johnnie Marie Hemme, age 69, of St. James will be Thursday at 1:00. Visitation will be Thursday morning from 11:00 to service time. Interment will be in the Oak Forrest Cemetery.

Funeral services for Brian G. Rippeto of St. James, age 48, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from Friday morning at 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Goshen Cemetery in Hartsburg, MO. Memorials may be made to the St. James Animal Shelter.
