An accident happened Tuesday afternoon at 1:50 in Dent County on Route C about three miles south of Lenox that took the life of a woman from Licking. According to the highway patrol report, 2004 Dodge Neon driven southbound by 35-year old Joann Sands of Licking, traveled off the right side of the roadway. The Neon then retuned to the road and crossed the center line where the Neon struck a 2014 Ford F-250 driven north-bound by 45-year old Steven Jackson of Rolla. Sands was pronounced dead at the scene by Dent County Coroner Gina White at 2:52 in the afternoon and her body was taken to the Dent County Coroner’s Office. Suffering minor injuries was 43-year old Michelle Jackson from the Ford F-250 and she was taken by an ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident and were removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing in Salem. Everyone was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met Tuesday evening for their regular meeting. Matt Milligan with New Harmony Church requested the street in front of His Place be closed for a church outreach activity on Monday, October 31st from 4:00 to 9:00 PM, his request was approved. City Administrator Ray Walden presented a request from Grace Community Church to close Water Street on Monday October 31st from 4:00 to 9:00 PM and this was also approved. Walden presented a bid from Dave Sinclair Ford to purchase a 2017 ½ 4 x 4 pickup truck for $22,118 and a bid off of the state contract for a 2016 model totaling $23,359. The board approved the budgeted purchase for the electric department from Sinclair Ford. After approving the consent agenda, Park and Recreation Director Tye Lydon requested approval upon recommendation of the Park Board to accept an anonymous $100,000 donation toward the “All Inclusive” playground for naming rights. The board approved accepting this donation with the Mayor, City Administrator and City Attorney choosing between two potential names that were offered by the donor. Walden reminded citizens of the yard waste guidelines for city pickup. Grass must be in biodegradable clear bags and these can be purchased from the city for $2.50 for 10 bags. The bags should be less than 75 pounds. Limbs must be under 48 inches and must be bundled. Citizens can also take yard waste to the designated area at the Industrial Park, free of charge. The Missouri Community Betterment Judges will be in town on Tuesday, September 13th. The asphalt and chip and seal work is complete and the Highway 19 Roadside Park will be closed later this week for maintenance of the drive. The GRO Steering committee has selected pilot projects and is working on an Economic Development Strategy Plan that will help with guidelines to hire for the Economic Development position. October 1st is City Wide Yard Sale and October 3-7 will be the Fall Clean Up Week. Mayor Brad Nash presented a proposed change in the standard operating procedures for the outdoor warning sirens. The board approved moving forward with an Ordinance to adopt at the next meeting.  The board approved Resolution No. 5-2016 to enable the city to apply for a grant through DNR, this resolution updates the Mayor’s name that was on the previous ordinance. The Board approved a purchase of 100 ton of salt for a total of $7,323.00 for the Street Department. The board approved sending City Clerk Mary Happel to the yearly LAGERS meeting next month. The board tabled discussion on business license requirements for construction dumpsters until the City Clerk can get more guidance from MML. The meeting was then adjourned.

On September 3rd at 1:15 in the afternoon, an accident occurred on Highway 47 north of Concord Road in Warren County. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2012 Jeep Liberty driven by 72-year old Lynn Martin of Viburnum was traveling close to the right edge of the roadway when she overcorrected and steered to the left. The Jeep began to skid as Martin steered the vehicle back to the right. The Jeep traveled of the right side of the road where it struck a metal culvert pipe with its under-carriage. The Jeep then overturned and came to rest on its wheels facing south. The Jeep sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Sturms Towing. Martin suffered minor injuries and was transported by Marthasville Ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Washington. She was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.

On September 5th at 8:15 in the evening an accident occurred on Dent County Road 5510, about 11 miles south of Salem in Dent County. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1996 Ford Mustang driven by 16-year old Alanna Tabares of Rolla swerved to miss a deer, traveled of the right side of the road way and struck a tree. The Mustang sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Whitakers Towing. Tabares suffered minor injuries and was transported by Salem Ambulance to Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers blanked the Houston Tigers by the score of 15-0 in a game that ended in the bottom of the 4th inning when Salem scored their 15th run. Kari Hatridge allowed only one hit and struck out eight. Getting two hits for Salem and driving in three runs were Camryn Pryor and Kari Hatridge, while Bekah Kirker and Shaylee Harrison each had two hits and two RBI. Salem improves to 7-1 on the year and 2-0 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will be at Cuba Thursday  at 4:30.

Matt Carpenter, Randal Grichuk and Jhonny Peralta all homered off closer Tony Watson with two outs in the ninth inning, helping the St. Louis Cardinals rally past the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-7 on Tuesday night. The Cardinals were down to their last strike when Carpenter homered to right-center to tie it, 6-6. Grichuk followed two batters later with a two-run shot off Watson (2-4), and Peralta piled on with a solo homer as St. Louis held on to the second wild card in the NL. Carpenter's homer was the 15th by a St. Louis pinch-hitter this season, a major league record. Yadier Molina went 4 for 5, including a first-inning grand slam. Mike Mayers (1-1) tossed a scoreless eighth for the win, and Seung-Hwan Oh worked the ninth for his 16th save. The Cards go for the sweep tonight at Pittsburgh at 5:10 on KSMO Radio.

Kendrys Morales had two home runs, including a three-run blast in Kansas City's seven-run ninth inning that propelled the Royals to a 10-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Morales hit a two-run shot in the first inning to help the Royals overcome the loss of catcher Salvador Perez, who left the game with a right wrist contusion after he was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning. Drew Butera's bases loaded single off Brandon Kintzler (0-2) broke a 3-3 tie and got the Royals rolling in the ninth. The Royals go for the sweep tonight in Minnesota.

Funeral services for Bradley H. Taylor, age 61, of Cuba will be Monday at 5:00 PM at Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, with full military honors. Visitation will be from 3:00-5:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made out to the Cuba VFW post #7174
