missourinetLOCAL NEWS:

The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. During public comments, Beth Frizzell was in representing the Dent County Tourism Commission. She said that Mike Homeyer had served the maximum of three two-year terms on the Commission and that Ed Pratt met the requirements for that position. The Commissioners approved Pratt being added to the Tourism Tax Committee by 3-0. Darrel Frits was in to request a posted speed limit on Dent County Road 5090, which is in the Southern Hills sub-division. Commissioner Purcell reviewed the procedure with Frits and supplied him the proper forms to start the process. The Salem News requested a comment on Representative Jeff Pogue’s statements in opposition to the one-tenth cent sales tax that is split between soil and water conservation and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to use for state parks that will appear on the November ballot. Commissioner Skiles said that he hopes voters will continue to support the sales tax because the benefits to agriculture and Missouri Parks far outweigh the need to oppose DNR on this issue. He continued that DNR definitely needs to be brought under control, but Missouri Legislators need to rein in DNR through other means. Commissioner Larson pointed out that currently Missouri parks are being shortchanged, so how would they be able to make up the shortfall if the tax fails? In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5220, 5170 and 2460, while a crew would be patching some chronic problem areas on county roads 4180 and 4110 with hot mix so the repairs are more permanent. Purcell went on to say that he wanted to encourage motorists on those roadways to exercise caution in the work areas. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5340 and 5300, while materials would be added to county roads 6130, 2200, and 2330. He added that a man would be cutting grass from the maintenance shed out to Highway 32-72. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles encouraged residents to attend the Chamber of Commerce Rodeo this tonight and Saturday at The Commons starting at 7:30 each evening and he reminded everyone that the Courthouse will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. He added that he wanted to thank the City of Salem for checking the Courthouse exterior lighting and replacing defective bulbs. The Commissioners were approving and paying bills. Deputy Clerk Crystal Pilkington had nothing to report. The next regular meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday, September 8th at 9:00 at the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
