The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2480, 6050, 6110 and 6220; while brush would be cut on county road 5380. Purcell said two men would be doing maintenance on the asphalt lay down equipment for repair work on Dent County Road 5013. He said they would repair and correct a portion of the road over a culvert. If they get finished with that job, they will work on a problem spot on county road 4180. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported materials would be added and backhoe work was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4380 and 5310, while materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Road 5340. Larson went on to say grading would be done on county road 2090 as well. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he attended the Growth of the Rural Ozarks steering committee meeting held Thursday at the Salem Community Center @ The Armory. He said after they have collected a tremendous amount of data, they are ready to move forward with meeting some of the needs identified by the group and they concentrated on the need for internships through the Salem High School. Principal Marty Anderson has been working on generating a program where the internships would match the abilities and the interests of the children to help them learn about the realities of business. A. J. Schafer also discussed a downtown beautification project where the overhead lines near the street would be buried and the streetlights would be more rustic. The city will be doing some sidewalk work and may try to incorporate that thinking into their preparation. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind all taxing entities they need to have their tax rate certifications into her office by September 1st. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

Captain James W. Remillard, commanding officer of Troop I, Rolla, announces the dedication of the “Trooper Gary Snodgrass Memorial Bridge.”  The memorial bridge is located approximately seven miles east of Salem, MO, and near the original crash site. The ceremony will be held 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at Troop I Headquarters in Rolla. This memorial bridge recognizes Trooper Gary W. Snodgrass, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in a traffic crash on February 21, 1970. Trooper Snodgrass was the ninth member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol to make the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of Missouri. House Bill 2335 established the “Trooper Gary Snodgrass Memorial Bridge” on Missouri Highway 32, crossing the Meramec River in Dent County. The bill was signed by Governor Jay Nixon and became effective Sunday, August 28th, 2016.

Col. Johnson reminds the public that the Labor Day holiday is a busy boating weekend. In 2015, there were 11 boating crashes which included two fatalities and 10 injuries. There were three drownings over last year's Labor Day holiday. Troopers arrested 22 people for boating while intoxicated during last year's counting period. In an effort to increase safety on our state’s waters, all available officers will be working over the holiday weekend. Missouri’s boaters are asked to do their part by remaining alert for other boats and swimmers, and being courteous on the water. With more boats on the water, it is even more important to pay attention when operating a vessel. If you choose to drink alcohol, don’t operate a vessel. Alcohol consumption slows reaction time. Pay attention to the boats around you and ask your passengers to assist with this. Evasive maneuvers should be made early and deliberately. Check your vessel’s navigation lights before heading out at night, and be sure to have spare bulbs on board. Avoid overloading your boat with too many passengers, and observe Missouri’s nighttime speed limit of 30 miles per hour on the water. Please wear a life jacket on or near water. If you witness criminal activity or experience an emergency, on or near the water, call the Patrol's Emergency Report Line at 1 (800) 525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.
