An accident occurred at 10:40 Saturday morning in Phelps County on I-44 about two miles west of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, 46-year old Maria Langevin of Rowlette Texas, fell asleep at the wheel of a 1996 Toyota 4-Runner, ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a road sign, and then struck an electric tower post. Langevin suffered minor injuries and will seek her own treatment. She was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Toyota was totaled and towed by Spurgeon’s Towing in St. James. The accident caused Ameren UE to question the integrity of the power line structure causing the shutdown of Interstate 44 for about six hours Saturday so that repairs could be made to the structure that has lines that cross Interstate 44.

An accident occurred at 5:45 Saturday evening in Phelps County on Route DD about 2800 feet east of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2013 Ford F150 driven by 23-year old Julie Richardson of St. James was traveling westbound on Route DD, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree and utility pole. Richardson and a passenger, 4-year old Abel Richardson, both suffered minor injuries and were transported by EMS to Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. Abel Richardson was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident, Julie Richardson was not. The Ford was totaled and towed by Spurgeon’s Towing in St. James.

The Dent County Health Center Board of Trustees held a tax rate meeting August 22nd. Jane Jadwin explained the documentation received from the State Auditor’s office had set the Tax Rate Ceiling for the coming year at $0.0960 per $100 assessed evaluation, which is a slight increase from the $0.0957 received for the current year. After discussion, the Dent County Health Center Board agreed to set the tax rate at the Current Year Tax Rate Ceiling of $0.0960. The tax rate meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving theft, a traffic violation, damage to storage units, and a domestic disturbance. On Thursday, August 18th at 7:49 pm, an officer located a 31-year old Salem male walking in the 800 block of South Warfel who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Friday, August 19th at 7:55 pm, an officer was detailed to Phil-Mart in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a 26-year old Salem male had stolen merchandise valued at $11.99 and left the area. Later that same night at 10:16, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle failed to stop and the officer pursued the vehicle to a residence in the 1200 block of South Gertrude. The driver of the vehicle, a 37-year old Salem male who had active felony arrest warrants from Crawford County, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The suspect was not apprehended. The investigation continues as an application for additional warrants for numerous traffic violations and felony resisting arrest will be made. On Saturday, August 20th 2:33 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The stop led to the arrest of a 30-year old Salem male for driving while being intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Later that afternoon at 4:22, an officer was dispatched to Babb Lane Storage in reference to damage to storage units. The report revealed someone unknown caused damage valued at $550.00 to two unit doors. That same night at 11:39, an officer responded to a residence in the 700 block of South Carty in reference to a domestic disturbance. The report led to the arrest of a 34-year old Salem male for possession of marijuana.  He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Zac Eplin scored two touchdowns and threw for three more as the Salem Tigers jumped out to a 35-0 first half lead and cruised to a 37-6 win over Sumner Friday night at the SHS Field. Texas Nall, J.J. McGowan and Jimmy Hobson all caught passes for touchdowns as the Tigers move to 2-0 on the season and open SCA play Friday night against Houston in Salem at 7:00.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers played in the Houston Invitational Tournament on Saturday and won the first tournament championship in program history, dominating their opponents and outscoring them by combined score of 41-5, allowed just seven hits while hitting four home runs. Salem defeated Seymore in their first game by the score of 15-2, then defeated Houston's JV team as a team dropped out of the tournament, 16-0 with Payton Curley hitting her first homer of the day. In the Championship game against Bakersfield, Salem won 10-3 with Curley, Bekah Kirker and Shelby Carr all hitting home-runs. Salem improves to 5-0 on the year and they will be at Vienna today at 5:00.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at West Plains tonight to face the Lady Zizzers. The JV will play at 6:00 with the varsity match to follow. Salem is 1-2 on the year.

Rookie Andrew Triggs earned his first win and Stephen Vogt and Khris Davis homered to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 7-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Triggs (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits, walked none and struck out eight in six innings. Jaime Garcia (10-10) took the loss giving up five runs in six innings. Matt Carpenter doubled twice, homered and scored the Cardinals' first three runs. His homer in the third extended the Cardinals' streak to 17 games with a homer, matching their season best. The Cardinals will be at Milwaukee tonight starting at 5:25 on KSMO.

The Kansas City Royals scored eight runs in the 6th inning and came back from a 4-2 deficit to beat the Boston Red Sox, 10-4. Raul Mondesi triple in three runs in the inning and Eric Hosmer doubled in two more as the Royals have now won 17 of their last 21 games. Salvador  Perez homered in the game for KC. Kansas City will come home to face the New Your Yankees tomorrow.

The St. Louis Blues have announced the Alex Petrangelo has been named the Team Captain for the 2016-2017 season. He takes over for David Backes who signed a free agent deal with the Boston Bruins in the off season.

The City of Salem Youth Flag Football will have registrations now through Friday, September 2nd at the City Administration Building, located at 400 North Iron during regular business hours. All boy and girls in grades 1st through 6th can signup and the cost is $20 per child. Games will be held every Saturday starting September 24th. Funeral services for Ruth Craft of Salem, age 89, will be this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem.  Internment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Melvin Engelmeier of St. James, age 84, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. James Athletic Department.

Funeral services for Andrea "Andy” Kronable Carrell of St. James, age 44, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Greentree Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Memorials may be made to the American Liver Association.
