On Monday, August 24th a missing person report was filed for Billy G. Smith Jr. Mr. Smith is described as a 5 foot, 10 inch, white male, with blue eyes, weighing 315 pounds. He has very short hair and a goatee. Mr. Smith has a tattoo of a teddy bear on his left shoulder with the name Angelea on a ribbon. Mr. Smith also has a Tasmanian devil tattoo on his right forearm. Smith was last seen on Monday morning August 24th at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, MO. Smith was driving a 2009 black Chevy Cobalt, with Missouri license KL5-M9L. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released reports. On Sunday, August 16th, a victim entered the Dent County Sheriff's Office to report his weed eater had been stolen from the bed of his truck. The victim stated he had just purchased a Stihl Model FS56RL weed eater on August 8th. The victim stated he went to the fair on August 15th and the weed eater was in the bed of his truck. Suspect information was not provided and the investigation continues. On Thursday, August 20th at 10:24 at night, the Dent County Sheriff's Office was contacted regarding a male wearing dark clothing and walking in the roadway on West Highway 32 near the Dent County line. Deputies were then detailed to the area. Deputies located an occupied passenger car in the parking lot of the Mount Zion Church. The female, identified as 23-year old Nicole James of Licking, was arrested following a K-9 search, which yielded a positive alert. James was arrested for the felony charge for Possession of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine) and felony charge for the Unlawful Use of Drug Paraphernalia (methamphetamine). James was booked into the Dent County Sheriff’s Office jail and a probable cause statement was submitted to the Dent County Prosecutor's Office. Deputies subsequently located the male and identified him as 23-year old Justin Giller of Licking. Giller was arrested for the Possession of Certain Weapons (brass knuckles) and transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office. Giller was booked, issued a summons and was released. On Sunday, August 23rd, deputies conducted a search warrant in the 200 block of County Road 4155. As a result of the search warrant, 46-year old Dennis M. Hodges of Salem, was arrested on 15 counts of the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. Hodges was placed on a 24-hour hold pending formal charges. Anyone with any information regarding the stolen weed eater is asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Office by calling 729-3241.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving theft, traffic violations and a domestic dispute. On Wednesday, August 12th at 12:40 AM an officer was detailed to a residence in the 200 block of East Center in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed a cell phone valued at $53.00 had been stolen. On Friday, August 14th at 8:15 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the 1200 block of North Highway 19 in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered an outbuilding near a residence and took a Stihl chainsaw valued at $180. Later that night at 9:33, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of the driver, a 22-year old Salem male, on an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was incarcerated on the warrant pending a court appearance. That same night at 10:37 an officer observed a 41-year old Salem male who had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem walking in the parking lot of Wal-Mart. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Saturday, August 15th at 1:29 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 45-year old Salem female for driving while intoxicated. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. An accident occurred at 7:40 Tuesday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about 13 miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Mercury Montego driven by 24-year old Patrick Mathes of Salem was traveling eastbound and failed to negotiate a curve. The Mercury traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a fence and then a tree. Mathes suffered minor injuries and was transported by the Salem ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mercury Montego sustained moderate damage and was towed by Schwartz Towing.

Tommy Pham had his second career three-hit game, Jaime Garcia pitched six strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-1 on Tuesday night. Six players had RBIs for the Cardinals, two apiece for Jhonny Peralta, Jason Heyward and Yadier Molina. The Cardinals' Peter Bourjos' got his first career pinch-hit home run. Matt Carpenter started it with a leadoff walk. Heyward had a two-run single and Molina an RBI double. Kolten Wong snapped an 0-for-8 skid with an RBI single. Molina, not the fastest base runner to say the least, stole third in the inning. The Cardinals play Arizona tonight at 8:40 on KSMO Radio.

The Royal’s Lorenzo Cain hesitated just long enough between first and second base that Baltimore was unable to turn a double play and he later scored the winning run on a single by Mike Moustakas, and the Royals went on to a 3-2 victory Tuesday night that pushed their winning streak to four games. Kendrys Morales hit a solo homer and Eric Hosmer also drove in a run for the Royals, who improved to 44-20 at home this season, including 12-2 in their current stretch. Danny Duffy (7-6) dodged trouble for most of 5 2-3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. The Royals play the Orioles tonight at 8:10.

Funeral services for Shirley Dee Welch of Salem, age 79, will be held today at 2:00 P.M. at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be held in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery.

Memorial services for Bodil I. Stewart of Salem, age 78, will be held Thursday at 3:00 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Graveside services for Robert Simpson Brown, JR. age 73, from Athens, Alabama, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Edward Eugene Bettigrew of Salem, age 60, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ed Bettigrew Family.

Memorial services for James (Jim) Dodds of El Paso, formerly of Salem, age 61, will be held Saturday, August 29th at 2:00 at the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in El Paso.
