On the morning of August 6th, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways Park staff discovered that the historic Wallace Barn, built in 1920 near Devils Well in Shannon County, had been destroyed by fire. This is a significant cultural loss for the park as well as for the local communities. The MO State Fire Marshal preliminary investigation revealed the fire was not an accident, and is possibly arson. There is a $5,000 reward through the State of Missouri for information leading to an arrest involving arson. If you have information pertaining to the burning of the Wallace Barn, please contact the Missouri Arson Hotline at 1-800-39-ARSON. In addition, those who wish to speak to a National Park Service (NPS) law enforcement officer can call 573-323-8079, or the NPS Investigative Services Branch Tip Line at 888-653-0009. This structure can never be replaced, but those responsible for its destruction can be held accountable.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving a shoplifter, theft and domestic disturbance. On Monday, August 15th at 12:45 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Dollar General in reference to a shoplifter. Upon arrival, the officer attempted to make contact with the female suspect who fled the scene driving a maroon Buick Regal. The officer pursued the vehicle to Jackson and Roosevelt where the suspect lost control, drove off the roadway and became high-centered on a dirt embankment. The suspect, a 59 year-old female of Salem was taken into custody for stealing merchandise valued at $51.53, resisting arrest and numerous traffic violations. She was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Tuesday morning, August 16th at 8:58, an officer observed a 30-year old Salem male driving near Henderson and Hunt  his license was suspended. The suspect vehicle was stopped and the driver was taken into custody.  He was issued a summons to appear in court for driving while suspended and released. On Wednesday, August 17th at 9:20 am, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft. The report revealed that someone unknown took a helmet valued $75.00 from a motorcycle that was parked near Hickory and Fourth. That afternoon at 2:57, an officer was detailed to the 700 block of West Missouri Highway 32 in reference to a domestic disturbance that had taken place.  Investigation of the report revealed a 25-year old Salem female had assaulted a 35-year old Salem male with a pool stick.  Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held a public tax levy hearing Tuesday evening at the fire station. The Board discussed the current tax rate of $0.2327 per $100 assessed valuation as well as reviewed their budget. A motion was made whereby the current rate $0.2327 be raised to the computed rate of $0.2338 per $100 assessed valuation and the motion carried for all. The public tax rate hearing was then adjourned. 

Everyone is invited to compete or eat at the 4th Annual Smokin’ Hot Veterans Rib Cook-Off on Saturday, September 10th at the American Legion Post located on Highway 32 West in Salem. The entry fee is $25 for one slab of pork ribs and extra slabs are available for $10 each. No outside ribs are allowed. You cook the ribs and judging will start at 3:00 with dinner immediately following the judging. The cost for dinner will be $10 per plate and consist of: a half slab of ribs, two side dishes, bread & dessert. There will also be a Hot Dog plate available for $5. Everyone is invited out as the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 2016 MRCA/URA semi-pro rodeo, produced by Outlaw Rodeo Productions on Friday, September 2nd and Saturday, September 3rd beginning at 7:30 pm nightly at the Commons on Highway 72 in Salem. Rodeo events will include: bareback riding, calf roping, breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing and bull riding. For kids ages 10 and under there will be a kids boot toss and calf scramble each night, sponsored by Doe Run. Discounted advance tickets are on sale now and available at the banks in Salem that include: US Bank, Town & Country Bank (Salem locations), Progressive Ozark Bank, The Bank of Salem (both locations), Riverways Federal Credit Union, and the Salem Chamber Office. The Salem Community Acoustic Jam will be held Saturday night at 6:30 at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center. Musicians and listeners of all ages are welcome to come. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be on the road at Seymore today starting at 4:30. The Lady Tigers are 1-0 on the year. They will play in the Houston Invitational Tournament this weekend at Houston.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be in Bunker tonight to face the Lady Eagles starting at 6:00.

Matt Carpenter, Randal Grichuk and Stephen Piscotty homered off Mets starter Jacob deGrom, powering the St. Louis Cardinals past New York 8-1 Wednesday night. Piscotty and Yadier Molina each had three of the Cardinals' season high-tying 19 hits. Carlos Martinez (12-7) gave up one run and four hits over eight innings. He also got two hits himself. The Cardinals went on to win for the seventh time in nine games. They will host the Mets in the rubber game of their three game set today at 5:20 on KSMO Radio.

Jose Fernandez pitched seven strong innings helping the Miami Marlins beat Kansas City 3-0 to snap the Royals' nine-game winning streak. The Royals went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position against Fernandez. Dillon Gee (5-7) allowed only two of the first 18 batters to reach before unraveling in the 6th inning. The Royals nine game win streak came to an end as they will be in Miami tonight for the rubber game of that series.

The City of Salem Youth Flag Football will have registrations now through Friday, September 2nd at the City Administration Building, located at 400 North Iron during regular business hours. All boy and girls in grades 1st through 6th can signup and the cost is $20 per child. Games will be held every Saturday starting September 24th. Funeral services for Maxine Gilmore of St. James, age 90, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Graveside services for Patricia Gotchal Eberhardt of Salem, age 66, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Renaud Cemetery in Edgar Springs. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Ruth Craft of Salem, age 89, will be Monday at 11:00 AM at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Chapel. Internment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.
