The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting at the courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading is being done on Dent County Roads 5510, 5525, 6250, 6255, 6570 and 6575. He said a grader is currently down and if it can be repaired, grading will be done on county roads 5015, 5080 and 5085. Purcell did say brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2400, 5525 and 6255. He also said a man went to Sullivan to pick up some Ultimate Pavement Material for chip and seal patch repair. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said materials would be added and grading was going to be done on county roads 3080 and 3090, while brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2620, 2630, 2640 and 3180. Larson also indicated that materials would be added to Dent County Road 2640. Sheriff Rick Stallings brought in some bids for tile and vinyl flooring for the dispatcher’s office in the Judicial Building. The commissioners wanted to know if the vinyl and tile was a commercial grade and asked Sheriff Stallings to get more information. They took no action. At the last meeting, Dent County Prosecutor Andrew Curley attended the meeting to discuss with the commission the full time prosecutors pay and how it is affecting some counties. Curley said he talked with the Prosecutor’s Association and they are in agreement with the problems brought up by the County Commissioner Association Reps. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Commissioners held their tax rate hearing Monday morning and all rates presented are per $100 assessed valuation. The General Revenue rate is currently at $.0350.  For the General Revenue Fund, the State Auditor approved a rate of $.3140 but there needs to be a sales tax reduction of $.2689 leaving the maximum allowable tax rate the county could take in General Revenue of $.0451. The Commission approved leaving the rate at $.0350 by a vote of 3-0. The Senate Bill 40 Fund has a current rate of $.1350 and could be raised to $.1364, but the SB 40 board asked to keep the rate the same at $.1350. The Commissioners voted 3-0 to keep the rate at $.1350. The Road and Bridge Fund current tax rate is $.2550 and could be raised according to the State Auditor to $.2576. The Commission approved unanimously leaving the rate the same at $.2550. The Senior Citizen Fund rate for 2015 was $.0479 and their board requested an increase to the maximum allowable rate of $.0480. The request was approved by the commissioners by a 3-0. The hearing was adjourned.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports. On Thursday, August 18th, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 32 and Route HH. As a result of the stop, Matthew Schwartz of Salem was arrested for possession of under 35 grams of marijuana as well as numerous traffic offenses. Schwartz was released pending a court appearance. Deputies also responded to the Short Bend area for a report of a female lying near the roadway. As a result of the investigation, Lyna Kyser was arrested for warrants out of Greene County and the Chillicothe Police Department. On Saturday, August 20th, deputies conducted a traffic stop on County Road 4124. As a result of the stop, Daniel Hayes was arrested for a Dent County Failure to Appear warrant. Hayes was incarcerated in the Dent County Jail pending a court appearance. On Sunday, August 21st, deputies assisted a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper with a traffic stop on East First Street in Salem. A K-9 search of the vehicle was conducted and deputies located suspected marijuana. As a result, Dawn Smith was arrested. Smith was issued a summons to appear in court and released. 

On Friday, August 12th an accident occurred at 12:52 in the early morning on Center Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2004 Toyota Solora driven by Katurah Vaughn of Salem was traveling eastbound on Center Street and drifted right, out of the roadway. There was a parked 2013 Nissan Juke owned by Katie Shaffer of Salem on the south side of Center Street, facing eastbound and unoccupied. The Toyota collided with the Nissan. Vaughn admitted that she was distracted by changing music on her phone and she admitted to consuming intoxicants and was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated. No injuries were reported. The Toyota sustained extensive damage to the front while the Nissan sustained extensive damage to the rear. The Toyota was towed from the scene.

Trista Heavin’s single in the 6th inning drove in  Camryn Pryor with the run that proved to be the difference as the Salem Lady Softball Tigers came back from two-seven run deficits and beat St. James, 13-12. Salem tied the game with a seven-run 5th inning at 12-12 after a Shaylee Harrison two-run bad hop single. Salem is 1-0 on the year and will be at Seymore Thursday.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will open their home season tonight starting with the JV match starting at 6:00 against the St. James Lady Tigers followed by the varsity game.

The 12th Tiger Football Booster Club is selling Booster shirts. The shirts may be purchased at the home football games or by contacting Stephanie Floyd at 573-247-1441. 

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off Monday and they will host the New York Mets starting tonight at 6:20 on KSMO. The Cardinals are in the second wild card spot 1.5 games ahead of the Miami Marlins.

The Kansas City Royals were also off Monday and they will be at Miami to face the Marlins. The Royals have won eight straight games. The Royals are 3.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles in the wild card race.

The City of Salem Youth Flag Football will conduct registrations starting today and lasting through Friday, September 2nd at the City Administration Building, located at 401 North Iron during regular business hours. All boy and girls in grades 1st through 6th can signup and the cost is $20 per child. Games will be held every Saturday from September 24th through October 15th. Funeral Mass for Betty Summers of Salem, age 88, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 8:30 until service time. Graveside services will at 12:45 that afternoon at the Bunker City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Maxine Gilmore of St. James, age 90, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
