An accident occurred Thursday morning at 7:25 in Dent County that took the life a Salem High School student on Dent County Road 2330 about five miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Chevrolet Aveo driven by 16-year old Savanna Roney of Salem was traveling eastbound when she lost control on the gravel road and traveled off the left side of the roadway. The Chevrolet struck a tree, returned to the roadway and overturned. Roney was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and was pronounced at Dr. Anne Delonais at 8:13 am. Roney was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Aveo was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department, Dent County Rural Fire Department, Lenox Rural Fire Department and the Salem Ambulance assisted the Missouri State Highway Patrol with the accident.

An accident occurred at 2:25 Wednesday afternoon in Texas County on Route N about seven miles northwest of Licking that took the life of a Licking man. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1995 Chevrolet Caprice driven by 35-year old Justin Williams of Licking was traveling southbound, crossed the centerline and struck a northbound 1991 Jeep Cherokee driven by 75-year old Duell Mallett of Licking. Mallett was taken to the Texas County Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead at 3:52 that afternoon by Dr. Zereik. Williams suffered moderate injuries and refused treatment at the scene. Mallett was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Caprice and the Jeep Cherokee were both totaled and removed from the scene by Jay’s Automotive Towing of Houston.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Randy League, Vice President of the Midwest Blue Oval Club was in to request use of the Courthouse Lawn on September 12th for the Club Rally and the request was approved 3-0. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams came in to report the CART receipts for August of $ 61,064.16. She reported that the year-to-date CART receipts are up by $19,907.21 and that is an increase of 4.72%. In the road report, District I Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5080, 5085, and 5015, while materials would be added to and grading done on county roads 5400, 6580 and 5390. He went on to say that materials would be added to Dent County Road 6010 and that a man was performing the 1,000-hour service on brush cutter #8. District II Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2110 and 5335, while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 5330. Larson went on to say that brush was being cut on Dent County Roads 3160, 4353 and 4350. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind people that the deadline for the Waste Reduction Re-Cycling Grant Applications is August 28th and the application must be in the MRPC office by noon that day. Commissioner Purcell said that he attended a Tourism Tax Commission meeting Monday where the Commission reviewed and approved three requests for reimbursement, plus reviewed two applications, one of which was approved while the other was tabled until more information is provided. Purcell went on to say that on Tuesday he attended the South Central Missouri Community Action meeting in Winona and he wanted to remind citizens that there are funds available as part of the Energy Assistance Winter Program. Sheriff’s Department Special Investigator Wayne Becker was in to let the Commissioners know that he had received notification of the approval of the State Cyber Crime Grant for a little over $45,000. The grant will provide for the program, which began in 2008 to continue. The Commissioners noted that the County has finalized a list of surplus property that is to be sold. Copies of the list can be picked up at the Road and Bridge Department on Scenic Rivers Boulevard West, Monday through Thursday from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm. Bids are to be sent to or dropped off at the County Clerk’s office by 10:00 am on September 14th. The results of the tax rate hearing are final and all rates presented are per $100 assessed valuation. General revenue currently is $.0350 with a State Auditor $.2550 and could be raised to $.2559. The rate of $.2550 was approved 3-0. Senate Bill 40 has a current rate of $.1350 and could be raised to $.1360, but the board had requested the rate approved maximum of $.0597. The Commissioners voted 3-0 to keep the rate at $.0350. Road and Bridge tax rate is currently remain at $.1350, which was approved 3-0. The Senior Citizen Fund rate for 2014 was $.0475 and the board requested an increase to the maximum allowable of $.0479 and the request was approved 3-0. At 11:00 the Commissioners voted to go into closed session to discuss contracts. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The St. Louis Cardinals were off Thursday and will open a three game series in San Diego tonight. The pregame show starts at 8:15 on KSMO Radio.

Ryan Hanigan drove in two runs and scored another on Jackie Bradley Jr.'s triple to help the Boston Red Sox beat Kansas City 4-1 Thursday night, ending the Royals' five-game winning streak. Salvador Perez had two of the Royals' six hits. The AL Central leaders had won 10 of its last 12 to open a 14 1-2 game lead in the AL Central. The Royals play the Red Sox tonight at 6:10.

Funeral services for Beverly Kay Grouns of St. James, age 50, will be held today at 12:00 at the Calvary Apostolic Church in St. James. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials may be made to the Samuel Karlinski Educational Fund.

Funeral services for Freeman W. Burrus of Salem, age 90, will be held tonight at 7:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time. Interment will be Saturday at 10:00 am at the North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be given to the Children’s Heart Foundation in Lincolnshire, Illinois.

Funeral services for Gilbert R. Halbrook of Salem, age 80, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Savanna Lynnette Roney of Salem, age 16, will be held Sunday at 4:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the Savanna Roney Family.

 Funeral services for Shirley Dee Welch will be held Wednesday, August 26 at 2:00 P.M. at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation for Shirley Welch will be held Tuesday, August 21, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be held in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.
