The Dent County Commission met Thursday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5520 and 6580. He stated that the Cat grader had an electrical problem, with the part having been ordered and if it came in and was fixed they would also be grading county road 5080. He went on to say that material was being hauled to Dent County Roads 6400 and 5170, while brush would be cut on country roads 5520 and 6250 and patching of chip and seal continues on county road 6510. Purcell stated that he attended a tourism meeting Monday evening and reported that two proposals were approved as well as four reimbursements. He went on to say that he attended the South Central County Action Agency meeting Tuesday night and the agency has applied for a $150,000 grant for home repairs in the seven country region. The application process will begin April 1, 2017 and the number to call for more information is 729-3500 EXT 10. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done and materials will be hauled Dent County Roads 3270, 3273, 3275 and 3360, while grading only would be done on county road 2130. He went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3180 and 3190. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Transportation Advisory Committee meeting where the topic of discussion was about a totally electric bus used at SM&T as well as an autonomous bus being looked at to be used on the base at Fort Leonard Wood. He went on to say that he spoke with Preston Cramer with MODoT about three new bridges in Dent County over the next three years that include two on Route FF and one over Dry Valley. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the county public tax rate hearing will be held on Monday, August 22nd at 10:00 AM for the General Revenue, Road and Bridge, Senate Bill 40 and Senior Citizen Service Funds. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society will be this Saturday, August 2oth, from 4:00 to 10:00 pm at the Salem City Park. Relay for Life proceeds will help benefit local cancer patients who go through programs such as the Hope Lodge and the Look Good Feel Better program, plus help fund research that provides effective treatments with the hope of fewer side effects. Research is typically started at larger scale cancer facilities such as MD Anderson in Texas and the Cancer Treatment Centers of America located in various locations throughout the country. When trials are completed and approved for patient use, then treatments are sent to participating hospitals such as the PCRMC for local patients. Involved this year is four teams: the “All in the  Family” captained by Teresa Stark; the second team is the “Salem FFA Team” captained by Hannah Headrick; the third team is from the  “Enrichment Services of Dent County” captained by Berniece Brakefield, and the fourth team is “Footloose and Cancer Free” captained by Rhonda Hutsell. There will be silent auctions, food, games and more. Entertainment this year includes Sinner Saved, the Grace Community Church Junk Band and Sean Michael an Elvis tribute artist. The Luminaria Ceremony will begin at dark after the entertainment and luminaries in honor of or in memory of can be purchased for $5 and can be decorated yourself or will be done the night of relay. Join the fight against cancer this Saturday, August 20th from 4:00 to 10:00 pm at the Salem City Park.

The Salem Football Tigers will open their regular season on the road traveling to McDonald County to face the Mustangs tonight at 7:00. These two schools have never played against each other. You can make the almost five hour trip west or listen in on KSMO Radio or online at ksmoradio.com starting at 6:30 with Tiger Talk and Coach Brian McNamee.

The City of Salem Youth Flag Football will conduct registrations starting today and lasting through Friday, September 2nd at the City Administration Building, located at 401 North Iron during regular business hours. All boy and girls in grades 1st through 6th can signup and the cost is $20 per child. Games will be held every Saturday from September 24th through October 15th. The Cardinals had the day off yesterday and they will be in Philadelphia tonight to face the Phillies. On KSMO, the game will be delayed and will begin at about 9:15 to 9:30 due to Salem Football.

Alex Gordon hit a grand slam, Dillon Gee (5-6) pitched seven strong innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 8-1 on Thursday night. The Royals have won five straight and eight of nine to move above .500 for the first time since July 22. Gordon has homered in three consecutive games. The Royals and Twins play again tonight.

Funeral services for Marco Derrick of Salem, age 84, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the American Legion for Veteran’s Christmas.

Graveside services for Vernis I. Williams of Newburg, age 91, will be today at 3:00 at the Green Forest Cemetery in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

A Funeral Mass for Anthony “Tony” McGuirk of Salem, age 82, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Nadine Bell of Independence, formerly of Salem, age 84, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Gladden Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Rachel House in Blue Springs, MO.

Funeral services for Larry Dale Land of Salem, age 69, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 Saturday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Welfare Society.

Funeral services for Charles Wesley Jones of Viburnum, age 71, will be held Sunday at the Freewill Baptist Church in Viburnum. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 at the church. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to the Safe Harbor Hospice. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Viburnum.

Funeral Mass for Betty Summers of Salem, age 88, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 8:30 until service time. Graveside services will at 12:45 that afternoon at the Bunker City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

There will be no services for Mildred Marlene Turner of Salem, age 70. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
