An accident occurred at 12:53 Monday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway 8 near the Steelville Country Mart. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Ford truck driven by 42-year old Christopher Stuckmeyer of Salem was traveling southbound exiting the gas station parking lot. A pedestrian, 45-year old Lawrence Storey of Steelville that was standing on the edge of the road and was struck by the Ford truck. Storey suffered serious injuries and was flown to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. The Ford truck sustained no damage and was driven from the scene.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors met for the regular meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. Prior to the meeting, a tax rate hearing was held. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the 2016 estimated real estate valuation will be $190,197,024 and personal property is estimated to be $58,283,983 for a total estimated assessed valuation of $248,481,007. Pryor explained that the tax rate could only be changed every other year and the rate could not be changed this year. The board voted to keep the rate of .192 per $100 assessed valuation. In the Administrator’s Report, Monica Gargus was introduced as the new Chief Financial Officer for the hospital. In the summary of operations, Assistant Administrator Kasey Lucas reported that in July the hospital had a loss from operations of $174,461 with an excess of expenses over revenues of $171,140. Chief Nursing Officer Mary Lou Brooks reported during the month there were 828 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 121 minutes. Also during the month, there were 222 ambulance runs with 221 patients being assessed and 173 patients transported to the hospital, 38 surgery cases, 1,555 outpatient registrations, 211 home health visits, 7,689 lab tests, 1,018 radiological procedures, 209 CT scans, 21 MRI scans, 7 nuclear med scans, 463 rehab treatments, 218 dialysis treatments and 341 clinical visits of which 153 were for podiatry. Pryor stated the next Hospital Auxiliary meeting would be September 1st at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. The Masquerade Jewelry Sale previously scheduled in October has been cancelled. A Linen Sale will be held on November 12 & 13 at the Dent County Fire Station. Assistant Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas gave the Electronic Medical Records report. The hospital has received a Medicaid Attestation payment of $210,000 and two staff are currently attending MEDHOST training. Pryor reported the next Health Fair will be September 9 & 10 at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Pryor reported a SMDH Foundation 5K Fun Run would be held November 7th at Montauk State Park with a $25 entry fee. A SMDH Foundation dinner will be held Thursday, October 8th. The board then went into closed session.

The Current River State Park, located north of Eminence off Highway 19, will be hosting the second of two Discover Nature Fishing Events this Saturday. The second Discover Nature Fishing Event will take place on Saturday, August 22nd from 9:30 to 11:30 am. This event will consist of one hour of instruction titled Lesson 3 that will cover things such as: five common Missouri fish, anatomy, habitat and life cycles. Lesson 4 will show you fishing with lures and fishing regulations, and both lessons will then be followed by one hour of fishing. Participants are limited to anglers ages 7 - 15 and families with children. There is no fee for this program and fishing equipment, instructors and bait are provided. Reservations are required. Ryan Vogelsong pitched six innings of two-hit ball and ace Madison Bumgarner keyed a seventh-inning rally with his first career pinch hit, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 on Tuesday night. The Cardinals play the Giants tonight at 6:15 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed outfielder Randal Grichuk on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain Monday. Outfielder Tommy Pham has been recalled from Memphis (AAA), his second stint with the Cardinals.The 24-year old Grichuk has a .284 batting average with 44 RBI and 15 home runs in 85 games for St. Louis, playing primarily in centerfield the last month. He left Sunday's game after the 7th inning with right elbow discomfort.

Ben Zobrist tied the game with a homer in the ninth inning, Jarrod Dyson scored the tie-breaking run from first base on pitcher Ryan Mattheus' throwing error and the Kansas City Royals went on to a 3-1, 13-inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. Jarrod Dyson led off the 13th with a single and scored when Mattheus (1-4) threw a sacrifice bunt by Kris Medlen (1-0) down the right field line. Ben Zobrist stunned the crowd of 28,719 by leading off the ninth against Aroldis Chapman with his 10th homer of the season. Lorenzo Cain followed with a single and stole second and third while Eric Hosmer was striking out. The Royals play the Reds tonight at 6:10.

Funeral services for Thomas D. Black of Edgar Springs, age 21, will be Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery in Licking.

A Celebration of Life for Eva Lavera Vaughan of Salem, age 92, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Church of Christ. Memorials may be made to Horizon Academy or Master’s Peace Clinic of Hope. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Beverly Kay Grouns of St. James, age 50, will be held Friday at 12:00 at the Calvary Apostolic Church in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials may be made to the Samuel Karlinski Educational Fund.

Funeral services for Freeman W. Burrus of Salem, age 90, will be held Friday at 7:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time. Interment will be Saturday at 10:00 am at the North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be given to the Children’s Heart Foundation in Lincolnshire, Illinois.
