The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors met for a public tax meeting followed by the regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. The Salem Memorial District Hospital reported estimated assessed valuations for real estate and personal property of $239,121,007 for 2016 compared to $244,425,541 for 2017 and the Board voted to leave the tax rate at $0.192 per $100 assessed valuation. Chief Financial Officer Monica Gargus gave the summary of operations for July that showed the hospital had a gain from operations of $162,829. Both inpatient admissions and outpatient registrations were above budget. The cash flow statement showed a gain in cash of $132,465 for the month with days in accounts receivable at 50, compared to 57 in June. Chief Nursing Officer Mary Lou Brooks reported during the month there were 73 acute care admissions, and 866 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 126 minutes. Also during the month, there were 239 ambulance runs with 164 patients being transported to the hospital, 42 surgery cases, 197 home health visits, 1,669 outpatient registrations, 9,257 lab tests, 941 radiological procedures, 210 CT scans, 25 MRI scans, 10 nuclear med scans, 645 rehab treatments, 162 dialysis treatments and 283 clinical visits. Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas reported that the final health screening for this year will be held September 14th and 15th from 6:00 to 9:00 AM at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. He updated the Board that the SMDH Foundation will have a fund raising event the Montauk State Park 5K Run/Walk on November 5th; then on December 10th, “Dancing with the Stars” event will be held at the City Hall in Salem;  and the golf tournament has been scheduled for May 5th at the Spring Creek Golf Club. Lucas stated that the hospital auxiliary will conduct their first meeting after having the summer off, on Tuesday, September 6th at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory with lunch provided at noon and those interested should attend. The auxiliary will have a Books Are Fun fundraiser on September 7th in the hospital library; a Masquerade Jewelry sale at the Dent County Fire Station, September 22nd and 23rd; a Purse Pallooza at the Dent County Fire Station on October 13th and 14th and the Scrubs and Beyond Sale will be October 27th in the hospital library. At the last meeting, Lucas explained the hospital would have to have a new process to address patient grievances required by CMS so the Board adopted a new patient grievance policy. Mary Lou Brooks reported that the Community Health Needs Assessment action plan includes a quarterly feed back and was approved by the Board. Hospital Attorney Mark Weaver spoke about the hospital districts and boundaries, and how it would be possible for the hospital to rid themselves of the six individual districts with a resolution thus allowing voting to be at large. The resolution was presented to and approved by the Board. The Board then approved the budgeted purchase of a replacement wireless infrastructure from CDW for $15,195; the budgeted purchase of two IS tablets from CDW for $1,903 for the Board and the non-budgeted purchase of two firewall upgrades from Dell for $3,923. Board Members were told they would receive an electronic copy of the annual bylaws for review at the September meeting and the board elected members for the 2018 finance committee and they were George Gruendel as Chairman, Judy Thompson and A.J. Seay. The Board then voted to go into closed session.

An accident occurred at 7:10 Tuesday night in Dent County on Highway 72 about three miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Ford Ranger driven by 61-year old Darrell Emory of Salem was traveling eastbound and went off the right side of the roadway and struck a mailbox. Emory overcorrected and the Ford Ranger then went off the left side of the roadway and struck an embankment. Emory suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Ranger sustained extensive damage and towed by Whitaker’s Towing.

An accident occurred at 1:43, early Wednesday morning in Crawford County on Eagle Hurst Road about 14 miles east of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Ford Taurus driven by 16-year old Raelyn Greer of Steelville was traveling southbound, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned. Greer suffered minor injuries while a passenger, 15-year old Nolan Halbert of Steelville suffered moderate injuries. Greer was transported by ambulance to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. Halbert was air lifted to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Everyone was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Taurus was totaled and removed from the scene by Miles Towing.

The City of Salem Youth Flag Football will conduct registrations starting Friday, August 19th and lasting through Friday, September 2nd at the City Administration Building, located at 401 North Iron during regular business hours. All boy and girls in grades 1st through 6th can signup and the cost is $20 per child. Games will be held every Saturday from September 24th through October 15th. Carlos Martinez took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, Jeremy Hazelbaker and Brandon Moss hit home runs and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 8-2 on Wednesday. Martinez (11-7) pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, allowing a run while striking out seven. He retired 15 of the first 16 batters before giving up a leadoff double to Teoscar Hernandez in the sixth. The Cardinals have won four straight and have the day off today before going to Philadelphia for the weekend.

Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night and complete a three-game sweep. The Royals start a four game set with the Twins tonight at 7:15.

The 30th Annual Ozarks Pigskin Preview is now available in Salem at the Bank of Salem, State Farm Insurance and at the KSMO Studios. Salem’s own Eli Floyd is among the outstanding players hi-lighted on the cover. The Pigskin Preview is free and you can learn about all the teams in the SCA as well as other southwest Missouri High Schools as four college programs.

Funeral services for Marco Derrick of Salem, age 84, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the American Legion for Veteran’s Christmas.

Graveside services for Vernis I. Williams of Newburg, age 91, will be Friday at 3:00 at the Green Forest Cemetery in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

A Funeral Mass for Anthony “Tony” McGuirk of Salem, age 82, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Nadine Bell of Independence, formerly of Salem, age 84, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Gladden Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Rachel House in Blue Springs, MO.

Funeral services for Larry Dale Land of Salem, age 69, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 Saturday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Welfare Society.

Funeral services for Charles Wesley Jones of Viburnum, age 71, will be held Sunday at the Freewill Baptist Church in Viburnum. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 at the church. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to the Safe Harbor Hospice. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Vibunum.

There will be no services for Mildred Marlene Turner of Salem, age 70. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
