An accident occurred at 12:30 in the early morning on Friday in Iron County on Iron County Road 66A. According to the highway patrol report, a 2010 Nissan Frontier driven by 18-year old Talon Johnson of Viburnum was traveling westbound and road off the roadway, down an embankment and overturned. A passenger, 24-year old John Heath of Salem suffered moderate injuries and was taken via Air Evac to St. Johns Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. No one was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan Frontier was totaled and removed from the scene by Abney Wrecker of Viburnum.

An accident happened Saturday at 12:06 in the afternoon in Phelps County on Route M about one-half mile west of Edgar Springs. According to the highway patrol report, a 2014 Honda Civic driven westbound by 34-year old Joshua Zieroth of Salem was being pursued by a deputy. Zieroth failed to negotiate a curve and went off the left side of the roadway where the Honda overturned and caught on fire. Zieroth suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Honda was totaled and removed from the scene by Lucas Garage.

An accident happened in Shannon County on Highway 19 about 14 miles north of Eminence at 7:15 Sunday morning. According to the highway patrol report, a 2008 Chevy Cobalt driven southbound by 24-year old Thomas Burkhart of Salem, traveled off the left side of the roadway, overturned and struck a tree. Burkhart suffered minor injuries and transported by a private vehicle to the Mercy Clinic in Salem. Burkhart was wearing a seat restraint when the accident happened. The Cobalt sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing in Salem.

Brent, Amy, Bailey, Wyatt and Bryce Martin of Dent County were named Dent County’s farm family for 2016. They will be among the 108 families honored during the Missouri State Fair’s Farm Family Day today. The Martin’s are active in 4-H and they raise cattle and hogs on their farm. The Martin’s were selected by the Dent County Extension Council and Dent County Farm Bureau to receive the award this year. Each year, the Missouri State Fair sets aside a day to recognize farm families from across the state that are active in their community, involved in agriculture and participate in local outreach and extension programs such as 4-H and FFA. The annual event is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Agriculture, the Missouri Farm Bureau, the Missouri State Fair, the University of Missouri Extension and the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

The Salem R-80 2016 Open Houses would be today and tomorrow. The open house for William Lynch Elementary will run from 5:30 to 6:30 and for the Salem Upper Elementary from 6:30 to 7:30. Tuesday, the Open House will be for the Salem Middle School will be from 4:30 to 6:00 and at the Salem High School from 6:00 to 7:30.

An accident occurred at 9:25 in the evening on Saturday, August 13th in Crawford County on highway 8 about 2 miles east of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Ford Thunderbird, driven by Briana Kemp of Steelville, was approaching traffic that was stopped for a turning vehicle. Kemp swerved left to avoid the stopped vehicle, a 2006 Ford Escape driven by 50-year old Cindy Swyers of Steelville. Swyers struck the Thunderbird in the right side and both vehicles came to rest on the side of the roadway. Both the Thunderbird and the Escape were totaled and towed by Miles Towing. Kemp suffered moderate injuries and was transported by Steelville Ambulance to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. Swyers suffered minor injuries and will seek her own treatment. Both were wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.

Work by the City of Rolla will close one lane of Highway 72 between Elm Street and Olive Street in Rolla from 6:00 AM until 5:00 PM TODAY. Motorists are advised of possible delays in the work area. The Missouri Department of Transportation and the City of Rolla appreciates the patience of travelers during the work. The Current River Scrappers Quilt Guild would like to invite area quilters to participate in their annual quilt exhibit to be held from September 1 through September 26 at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center in Salem. If you have a quilt you would like to display, bring it to the ONCRC on August 30th or 31st between 9:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon. The ONCRC is located at 202 S Main which is Highway 19 in Salem. Exhibitors will need to complete a registration form to have their quilt displayed. If an entrant needs to submit their quilt before August 30th or for more information about the exhibit, contact Tressa Schafer by calling 729-8102.

The 30th Annual Ozarks Pigskin Preview is now available in Salem at the Bank of Salem, State Farm Insurance and at the KSMO Studios. Salem’s own Eli Floyd is among the outstanding players hi-lighted on the cover. The Pigskin Preview is free and you can learn about all the teams in the SCA as well as other southwest Missouri High Schools as four college programs.

Stephen Piscotty hit a three-run homer, Brandon Moss followed with a solo shot one out later and the St. Louis Cardinals used a five-run eighth inning to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-4 on Sunday night. Cardinals closer Seung Hwan Oh got the final five outs, including three strikeouts in the ninth. The Cardinals have today off.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed Matt Holliday on the 15-day disabled list with a broken thumb. To replace Holliday, they added right handed pitcher Luke Weaver to the roster in time to start Saturday’s game with the Cubs that the Cards won, 8-3.

Paulo Orlando and Lorenzo Cain each got four hits and drove in three runs as the Kansas City Royals won their first road series since late June, beating the Minnesota Twins 11-4 Sunday. Orlando homered, tripled and scored three times. Edinson Volquez (9-10) threw six solid innings to snap his five-game winless streak. He gave up two earned runs and five hits. The Royals will play Detroit tonight.

Funeral services for Raymond Dale Rowe of Edgar Springs will be Tuesday at 1:00 at the Rolla Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 until the 1:00 service time. 

Graveside services for Vernis I. Williams of Newburg, age 91, will be Friday at 3:00 at the Green Forest Cemetery in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
