The Dent County Commission met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said work crews continue to work on the roads that were damaged by the intense rain Sunday night and Monday. He said patch grading and materials would be added to Dent County Roads 5170, 6303, 6305, 6350 and 6500. Purcell stated a backhoe would be doing ditch work and also opening up clogged pipe openings on county roads 2470, 5460, 6080, 6300 and 6370. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said patch grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2090, 2110, 2210, 2370, 4280 and 4290. Larson said regular grading would be done on county roads 3250, 3270, 3273, 3275 and 5200; while materials would be added to county road 2115 and patch grading would also be done on that road. Materials will also be added to county road 2180. Larson went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5225. Larson wanted to remind everyone the low water bridge on Dent County Road 4280 is closed to ALL traffic. Larson said the bridge is undermined and is unsafe. Larson said road closure signs are up and piles of gravel have been placed in front of the bridge to prohibit traffic from traveling on the bridge. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skies reported that Dennis Purcell and Mike Homeyer’s three-year terms on the Meramec Regional Development Corporation Board expired June 30th. Both individuals agreed to continue to serve on the board if the commission so desired. The commission voted 3-0 to extend the terms of both men to June 30th, 2018. Skiles reported the Missouri Department of Natural Resources would provide a free pesticide collection event this Saturday in Owensville. The collection is open to all Missouri farmers and households and will take unwanted pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, rodenticides, de-wormers, fly tags and fertilizers containing herbicides or pesticides. Pesticides from businesses, pesticide production facilities, pesticide distributors, pesticide retailers and the like will not be accepted. Also, paint, explosives, yard waste, fire extinguishers, electronics and trash will not be accepted. The event runs from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Owensville City Police Department (near City Hall) located at 109 N. Second St. For more information on the pesticide collection, call CJ at 573-751-0616. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said she balanced with the treasurer on all accounts for the month of July. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open the public.

A swamping accident occurred at Saturday, August 1st at 2:56 in the afternoon in Morgan County at the Lake of the Ozarks. According to the Missouri State Water patrol report a 1982 Sea Sprite driven by 54-year old David Sutton of Salem was heading north when an unknown vessel passed the Sea Sprite. The wakes from the unknown vessel swamped the Sea Sprite causing it to overturn ejecting Sutton and two passengers, 28-year old Brian Stroburg and 30-year old Jeremy Sutton both of Salem. No injuries were reported. The unknown vessel continued traveling while the Sea Sprite sustained extensive damage and was towed from the water by a private conveyance.

The Salem R-80 School District will host their Open Houses on Monday and Tuesday, August 17th and 18th. The William Lynch Open House will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 Monday, August 17th, and the Upper Elementary School Open House will also be Monday from 6:30 to 7:30. The Middle School and High School Open Houses will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 on Tuesday, August 18th. The first day of school will be on Wednesday, August 19th.

The deadline has been extended for the statewide 2015-2016 Official Manual, State of Missouri (Blue Book) photo contest. Due to increased interest, all entries must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, August 21st. The theme for this year’s contest is "A Day at the Park," celebrating all types of Missouri parks. Missouri residents of all ages can celebrate all types of Missouri parks by sharing their photos of favorite locations and memories. Outstanding photographs will be chosen from each of the following three categories, and will be published in the upcoming Blue Book. The first category is state and local parks, the second is sports and theme parks and the third category is state Historical Sites. The Salem Football Tigers will be in Sullivan tonight starting at 7:00 for their jamboree this year with Pacific, Sullivan and St. James. Salem’s first regular season game will be at Kirksville next Saturday, August 22nd at 1:30.

Pedro Alvarez blasted a two-run homer in a seven-run first inning on Thursday night to help the Pirates break an eight-game losing streak at Busch Stadium in a 10-5 win over St. Louis. The Pirates moved within six games of the Cardinals with the win. Alvarez and Neil Walker each had three hits as the Pirates held on after a huge first inning. Lance Lynn (9-7) got just two outs in the shortest of his 119 career starts. He gave up six runs, and four of the runs were unearned after a throwing error by third baseman Matt Carpenter. The Cardinals did come back and closed the deficit to 7-5 in the seventh. Yadier Molina finished with three RBI for the Cardinals. St. Louis will host Miami with Jaime Garcia (4-4) going for the Cards while Tom Koehler (8-9) getting the call for the Marlins. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 6:20.

The Kansas City bullpen coughed up a 5-1 lead as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim rallied to beat the Royals, 7-6 scoring two runs off Wade Davis and four more off closer Greg Holland. Jeremy Guthrie, who allowed two runs and three walks over six innings, got a no decision in this one. Five different Royals had RBI's in the game that was the first of a four-game set. Tonight, it will be Jered Weaver going for the Angels against Danny Duffy of the Royal.

Funeral services for Glen Edward Cox of Salem, age 86, will be Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until 1:00. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Hermon Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lela Fae Babb of Salem, age 91, will be Monday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Alzheimer's Association.

Funeral services for Leah H. Pagel of Rolla, age 86, will be held Tuesday at 1:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Southard Cemetery in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Casa Organization.

A Celebration of Life for Eva Lavera Vaughan of Salem, age 92, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Salem Church of Christ. Memorials may be made to Horizon Academy or Master’s Peace Clinic of Hope. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
