The Salem Park Board met Thursday evening at the Salem Community Center @ The Armory. The board was distributed income and expense statements for the Parks and Recreation Fund, a comparison of the Salem Pool and other local aquatic centers, a pool incident report of which there were four minor instances this year, and a map where the city parks are. President Stan Podorski said he would like to see how each individual activity or sport fairs on their own, but those statements were not available at the time of the meeting. He did say there were additional pool revenues this year as well as additional income for the baseball and softball program which was positive. He reported he had still not received any guidance on the actual responsibilities of the park board from the city attorney and apologized to the board, and also did not have a report on the offer for naming rights for the All-Inclusive playground. Christy Decker reported on pool activities and some items that need to be addressed including the pool house roof and plumbing structures. Those items would have to be bid out and President Podorski feels that the Park Board should request that those items be paid from the Capital Improvement Sales Tax and not the Parks and Recreation Sales Tax as this has been a problem for a few years, but there was no vote taken. Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon reported the pool will close this Sunday with a “Paw Pallooza” that day where people can bring their dogs to the pool with them. The cost for each dog will be an additional $2.00 on Sunday. He said registration for flag football would begin on August 22nd and last until September 5th at the City Administrative Offices at 400 North Iron Street. The cost per child will be $20. The league will start on September 24th. He said flyers will go out once school starts. He said he is looking to start a co-ed volleyball league in October, and may start basketball in November this year while the adult basketball program would be held January through March. Podorski asked the Park Board members to visit each local park and to come back to the next Park Board meeting with suggestions, comments and/or criticisms of what they see, or suggest if additional parks are needed. It was brought up that the local parks are really not convenient for those with a handicap as they were built many years ago and that needs to be addressed. He visited the parks and felt in order to put the parks in shape, the board needs to look at developing a five-year plan that works in conjunction with the city’s five-year plan. Since the park board still does not have a definitive direction from the city attorney, no date was set for their next meeting and this meeting was adjourned.
