The Salem Police Department released reports involving shoplifters, a traffic violation and someone passed out in a vehicle. On Monday, August 3rd at 2:57 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 61-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued $579.00. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. That same night at 9:18, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 25-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $118.10, aas well as for possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Tuesday, August 4th at 9:34 pm, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 42-year old male of Ellington for possession of a controlled substance and the possession of drug paraphernalia. He was incarcerated pending the application of a warrant. On Wednesday, August 5th at 9:21 pm, an officer was sent to Casey's General Store located on McArthur in reference to someone passed out in a vehicle. That investigation led to the arrest of a 23-year old male of Rolla for possession of benzodiazepines, the possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. The Salem Area Arts Council is hosting an art media workshop for children at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center (ONCRC) on Thursday, August 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Children will be allowed to learn about and dabble in a variety of art media under the watchful guidance of professional art teachers. Acrylics, pottery, oil, charcoal, watercolor, sculpture, mosaic, so MANY to choose from to learn about! Who knows, you may be encouraging the next local artist!!! Led by art teachers Sally McCollouch and Angela Dingess, each participant will get lots of individual guidance. For $20, your child can experiment with a variety of media, creating unique piece of art to take home. This activity is recommended for children ages 6-15, but younger children may come if accompanied by an adult (at no charge). The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is accepting applications through Monday, August 17th for its next class of conservation agent trainees. Selected candidates will undergo 26 weeks of intense training in all facets of law enforcement and resource management. Those who make the grade will receive county assignments and become the face of conservation in their assigned communities – enforcing the Wildlife Code of Missouri and helping the public with issues such as nuisance wildlife and land management. To qualify, applicants must have a bachelor's degree in a field related to the natural sciences or criminal justice. If you love gardening and enjoy learning and sharing knowledge with others, the Missouri Master Gardener program could be for you. Through activities such as Extension newsletter articles, workshops, speaker’s bureaus, garden show booths and demonstration projects, Master Gardeners provide gardening information to thousands of Missourians each year. The core course training will be held on Thursday evenings starting August 20th to November 19th from 6 to 9 pm. The classes will be held at Webster University at 1103 Kingshighway in Rolla. The cost of the class is $150, which includes the Master Gardener Core Manual. Registration deadline is August 17. The program will cover the subjects of plant anatomy, soils and fertility, annuals and perennials, fruit production, vegetable gardening, lawn care, insects, landscaping, propagation and plant disease. Everyone is invited out as the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 2015 MRCA/URA semi-pro rodeo, produced by Outlaw Rodeo Productions on Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th beginning at 7:30 pm nightly at the Commons on Highway 72 in Salem. Rodeo events will include: bareback riding, calf roping, breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing and bull riding. For kids ages 10 and under there will be a kids boot toss and calf scramble each night, sponsored by Doe Run. Discounted advance tickets are on sale now and available at Town & Country Bank (both locations), Bank of Salem (both locations), Riverway Federal Credit Union, Progressive Ozark Bank and US Bank in Salem. This is for all school-aged children participating in sports and a parent or guardian MUST be present.

Rookie Stephen Piscotty singled in the go-ahead run in a three-run fifth inning off Jeff Locke as the St. Louis Cardinals went on to beat the Pitssburgh Pirates, 4-3 in the frist game of a three game set. Carlos Martinez (12-4) gave up three runs in eight innings on nine hits, struck out eight and walked one. Jason Heyward had two hits and two RBI to lead the Cardinals who now lead Pittsburgh by six games. The Cards and Pirates play tonight at 7:15 with Michael Wacha going for the Cards against Garrett Cole of the Prates. You can hear the game on KSMO.

Mike Moustakas hit a two run-homer and drove in three runs as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers, 6-1 at Kaufmann Stadium. Eric Hosmer and Lorenzo Cain, who finished with four hits in the game, also homered for Kansas City as Yordano Ventura pitched six scoreless innings to get the win. The Royals and Tigers play again tonight.

St. Louis Blues forward Jori Lehtera will be sidelined for six to eight weeks after surgery on Tuesday, August 4th on his right ankle, the team said Monday. The Blues said the 27-year-old Lehtera was injured at the end of the season. Lehtera played in 75 regular-season games in his first NHL season and had 14 goals and 30 assists.

Without so much as playing in a game for the St. Louis Rams, quarterback Nick Foles signed a contract extension with the team last Friday night. The extension is for another two years on top of the one year Foles had remaining on his rookie contract and could keep the quarterback with the Rams through the 2017 season. Sources have said the deal is worth $24.5 million dollars.

Graveside services for Doris Jo Rivera of Salem, age 70, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Sidney Carl Byington of Rolla, age 76, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
