An accident occurred Saturday morning at 10:35 in Dent County on Highway B 10 miles southeast of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a westbound 1997 Honda CRV driven by 25-year old Bryan S. May of Patterson, Missouri, traveled off the right side of the roadway striking a tree and overturning. A passenger, 8-year old David K. Callahan, sustained serious injuries. May, along with passengers 27-year-old Amber M. Brown and 5-year old Dakota D. Brown, suffered minor injuries. According to the report, all occupants were wearing a safety device and all were transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. The Honda was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

An accident happened Thursday afternoon at 3:50 in Crawford County on Highway 19 about a mile south of Cuba. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 GMC van driven southbound by 61-year old Larry Smith of Bourbon, was slowing for a vehicle that was going to make a left turn in front of him, when 73-year old Vonna Simmons of Steelville driving a 2007 Chevy Aveo southbound, failed to observe the van slowing and struck the backside of the GMC van. Suffering minor injuries were Smith and a passenger in the Aveo, 54-year old Ida Simmons of Steelville. Both injured persons were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla by the North Crawford County Ambulance. Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat restraint. The GMC Van had moderate damager and was driven from the scene while the Chevy Aveo sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Miles and Sons Towing.

An accident happened Friday morning at 7:30 in Crawford County on Highway 19 about two miles south of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Chevy Lumina driven southbound by 16-year old Lauren Billingsley of Steelville, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence and then a tree before coming to rest. Billingsley suffered minor injuries and was transported by a private vehicle to a medical facility to seek treatment. Billingsley was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Lumina was totaled and removed form the scene by Miles and Sons Towing.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of July. During the month, they wrote 16 equipment repair orders, 10 summons to appear in court, 15 warning tickets, and 17 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 12 accidents, two burglaries, one report of child molestation, two reports of disorderly conduct, four reports of domestic assaults, three reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while revoked and/or suspended, two reports of fraudulent use of a credit and/or debit service, one report of leaving the scene of an accident, and one report of a lost and/or stolen license plate. The department also investigated one report for an open container, one report of possession of an illegal weapon, two reports of property damage, one report of rape, one report of resisting and/or interfering with an arrest, 14 reports of stealing, one report of tampering, one report of trespassing, two reports of a violation of an expartee and/or full order of protection and one 96 hour commitment. They also investigated one report for the distributing/delivering/ manufacturing/producing/possession of a controlled substance, one report of manufacturing amphetamine, four reports of possession of amphetamine, two reports of possession of heroin, three reports of possession marijuana, six reports of possession of drug paraphernalia, and one report of possession of synthetic drugs. The Salem Police Department conducted one death investigation, received 1,634 calls for service during the month, handled 142 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 69 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 20 hours in court testifying, and five hours as court bailiff. The calls in July included 13 calls for escorts, five calls for an intoxicated driver, four calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, one intoxicated pedestrian call, eight calls for domestic disputes, and four calls for a wrecker. There were four 911 calls, four calls for a peace disturbance, 11 calls for alarms sounding, four calls for fights in progress, 13 ambulance assist calls, one fire call and three calls for property damage. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,931 miles and arrested 25 males and 9 females during the month of July.

Khris Davis hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the eighth inning off his recent teammate Jonathan Broxton, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat St. Louis 5-4 Sunday and ended the Cardinals' four-game winning streak. Broxton (1-3), traded from Milwaukee to the NL Central leaders on July 31st, relieved Kevin Siegrist with a runner on second and one out with a 4-3 lead. Matt Carpenter had given the Cardinals the lead with a three-run homer in the 7th inning. Jason Hayward had two hits and a RBI for the Cardinals who had their team pitching scoreless inning streak stopped at 38 scoreless innings. John Lackey went six inning and allowed two homers and three runs on only four hits. The Cardinals have the day off today before starting a three game series with Pittsburgh at Busch Stadium.

Kendrys Morales hit a two-run homer that put Kansas City ahead 3-0 in the first inning and help the Royals to a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox this weekend. Kelvin Herrera (3-2) picked up the victory despite blowing a save and giving up the tying run in the eighth on Melky Cabrera's RBI single with two outs. Alex Rios scored the game winner on a grounder to first by Omar Infante in the 8th inning to break a 4-4 tie. Royals starter Danny Duffy was pulled after 3 1-3 innings and 73 pitches. He gave up three runs in the third on a walk, hit batter, wild pitch and two hits. Johnny Cueto will make his first home start since the Royals acquired him in a July 26 trade with the Reds against Detroit tonight.

A Celebration of Christian Burial for Elaine Edwards, age 85, of St. Peters, formerly of Steelville, will be Tuesday at 10:00 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Steelville. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Memorials may be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

A Celebration of Life for Eva Lavera Vaughan of Salem, age 92, will be held Thursday, August 20th at 11:00 at the Salem Church of Christ. Memorials may be made to Horizon Academy or Master’s Peace Clinic of Hope. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial services for James (Jim) Dodds of El Paso, formerly of Salem, age 61, will be held Saturday, August 29th at 2:00 at the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in El Paso.
