The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Guy Cummings was in to thank Commissioner Gary Larson for getting the pot holes fixed on Dent County Road 3210, also known as the hospital road, but would like to see a load limit on that road due to the high volume of traffic that includes log trucks. Larson explained that the County has no planning and zoning and it would be hard to place a load limit on county roads. Cummings also wanted to know why Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock is asking for an additional $5,500 to collect city taxes and felt that if the taxpayers are already paying him, that this was double dipping. The Commission gave him the Statute that says county collector’s can collect a fee for collecting city taxes. In road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that the Max Valley received about three inches of rain on Wednesday and he had sent a crew to check for washouts or damage and found none. He said that grading would be done and materials would be hauled to Dent County Roads 5460 and 6660. Grading only would be done on county road 5080 and materials only would be hauled to county roads 4150 and 4155. He went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 6090 and 6190. Purcell also stated that brake repairs were being performed on truck #71 and truck tires were being replaced on truck #117. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3020, 3050 and 4283 while materials would be hauled to county roads 2200 and 2370. Larson also stated that some patch grading would be done and maintenance work would be done on trucks #70 and #72. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles reported that he has been working on the historical grant money from DNR for the courthouse windows. The county would have to sign an easement with DNR for the grant money and Skiles felt it would be best if the county put those windows in on their own. The Commission voted 3-0 to put out for bids for the replacement of the windows on the first floor of the courthouse, about 19, and Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock would pay for his own office windows out of his Tax Maintenance Fund. Bids are due back and will be opened on Thursday, August 27th at 10:00 am. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she balanced with the Collector and Assessor on all monthly collections, add-ons and abatements for the month of July. Jack Todd with Victor Heating & Cooling, LLC was in to discuss the courthouse air conditioning unit in the courtroom as he felt it would be best to increase the unit as well as change out the furnace and add some duck work. Todd felt that a 5-ton 3-phase unit would be sufficient. The County would also need to get with an electrician to see what would need to be done for an electric upgrade. The Commission voted 3-0 to put out for bids the air conditioning in the courtroom at the Courthouse. Those bids are due back and will be opened on Monday, August 17th at 10:00 am. Chad Heithold with Heithold Electric came in and gave a quote to cover a new circuit to feed a new 5-ton 3-phase air conditioning unit with the Commission. No decision was made. Jim Kotchedoff, Public Administrator came in to update the Commission on his caseload, and wanted if possible, to get temporary part time help. Although it is not budgeted, the Commission did agree 3-0 for him to hire part time help. The Commission will then have an amended budget hearing on Monday, August 24th at 10:00 am to amend the expense for the Public Administrator budget. Kenny Woolf stopped by to ask about getting trash cleaned up by trailers on county road 5070. Commissioner Purcell has addressed this issued and encouraged him to visit with the Sheriff as well. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 12:35 Wednesday afternoon in Texas County on Highway 17 about three miles north of Houston. According to the highway patrol report, a 2009 Ford Mustang driven by 31-year old April Wedge of Bucyrus was traveling southbound, hydroplaned on the wet pavement, crossed the center of the road and collided with a 2011 Ford Fiesta driven by 22-year old Rebecca Smith of Licking. Smith suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. Everyone involved was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.
