Media, dignitaries, local businesses people and a few citizens were on hand Thursday when the Missouri State Parks provided the first look at the construction of a “new” state park being built on the property of the former Camp Zoe. Bill Bryan from the Missouri State Parks described artists renderings of what the new lodge will look like when completed. He also described a number of improvements that are going to be made in the park to make it friendly to year-round visitors that include not only campers but business people as well. Bryan said the intent is to keep the area looking like the “Missouri” Ozarks and provide people a safe place to take their families. The only remnants of the old Camp Zoe that was used as a summer campground from 1929 into the 1980’s was the stone lodge and the horse stables. Bryan said there is an old civil war era cemetery that was roped off and workers discovered the foundation of an old one-room school house that the state park system plans to restore. The “new lodge” will feature a restaurant that will overlook a pond to the left of the main entrance that will brush up against the building. According to the state parks printed release, up to 78 guests will be able to stay at the new lodge. The lodge on the backside runs 10 degrees off center to Echo Bluff, a very popular area on Sinkin Creek. Cabins will also be available and construction of them had already begun near the lodge. When completed, the nine cabins could house as many as 108 guests. Bryan went on to say there will be 43 campsites with all amenities, with another 19 that will have just water and electric service. At the tree lines, there will be about four acres for primitive camping. Also under construction is a new 462-foot natural rock bridge that will span Sinkin Creek right off the campsite that will take visitors to the lodge. Bryan further went on to say day visitors will be able to enjoy the park as well since they are adding a number of parking spaces that will be walking distance from Sinkin Creek that run almost parallel to the water, but far enough away to provide the rural experience. Also planned for the new state park are a bluff-top event pavilion and amphitheater although access to those areas was not allowed due to the construction.
