The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that the Bunker area had substantial rainfall Wednesday afternoon resulting in various washouts and road damage. He said the appropriate crews and equipment were sent to the area to make road repairs. Purcell said the Montauk and Cedar Grove areas were being checked for storm damage. He went on to say that patch grading was being done on Dent County Road 6190, as well as 5490 where materials were being added. Purcell added that brush was being cut on county road 6220, also known as the Custer Road. He also stated that the chip and seal overlay contractor had an equipment breakdown, but would be continuing work next week. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2120 and 6160, plus county roads 4290 and 3250 which would have materials added. He added that patch grading would be done on county roads 2110 and 2540. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and other SACBA Board Members toured Echo Bluff State Park on Monday. Skiles stated that regardless of how folks feel about how the plans and financing came about, the park will have considerable economic impact on Salem, Dent County and Shannon County. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting continues through August 1st and that her office will be open Saturday from 8:00 am until 12 noon for absentee voting. She added that poll workers were trained this week and that the voting equipment was tested. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released several reports that occurred on Sunday, July 17th that involved a traffic violation, a suspicious vehicle theft and an active warrant. At 1:16 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The stop led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated, and the arrest of three other male passengers ages 16, 17 and 19 all of Salem for being a minor in possession of intoxicants. The three adult age suspects were issued summonses to appear in court and were released. The juvenile suspect was released to a parent and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. That same morning at 3:28, an officer was investigating a suspicious vehicle located on the Wal-Mart parking lot. The investigation led to the arrest of a 23-year old female of Newburg for possession of methamphetamine. She was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that same morning at 7:30, an officer was sent to a residence in the 300 block of South Pershing in reference to a theft.  The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a 6500-watt American Camper generator valued $650.00 from the garage of the residence. That same night at 8:43, an officer located a 39-year old Salem male near Dilworth and Highway 32 who had active arrest warrants from the City of Salem and Phelps County. He was taken into custody on the warrants and incarcerated pending court appearances. Anyone with any information regarding the theft report is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

From August 1st to August 26th Artisans of the Ozark Fiber Fling will offer an exhibit that represents a walk from fleece to fabric at the  Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center 202 South Main, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. Admission is free. On display will be spinning wheels, various looms, needle felted items, and fleece for the public to touch.  There will also be finished goods such as shawls, jewelry, fashion accessories, and home goods. Some of these are available for purchase by the public. There will be live demonstrations of spinning, weaving and various knitting skills. Susan Wilson will be demonstrating Drop Spindle Spinning and regular and beaded finger weaving each Wednesday in August from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Lois Wissmann will be demonstrating spinning or stick weaving on Friday, August 12th from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Also, the artisans will have a Sale Day on Saturday, August 20th from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. with all kinds of fiber art goods to choose from. Ann Anderson will be demonstrating various knitting skills on Tuesday August 23rd from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and For information about this exhibit contact the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center by calling 729-0029.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways and Current River State Park will be offering free paddling clinics today and on August 5th and 12th.  Instruction will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a dry land basics session and paddle stroke instruction on the lower lake at Current River State Park.  Students will have the option to continue instruction on the river in the afternoon, paddling approximately 4 miles from Current River State Park to Round Spring with an instructor. Topics to be covered include canoe and kayak equipment, rescue techniques, basic paddle strokes and maneuvers, and river safety.  Instructors for this clinic are certified by the American Canoe Association.  Kayaks, paddles, and personal floatation devices will be supplied by Current River State Park and the clinics are free to all participants.  Each session is limited to twelve participants, so pre-registration is required. For more information or to register for one of the sessions call the Round Spring Visitor Center at (573) 323-8093 or sign up in person at the Round Spring Visitor Center, which is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.  These clinics are part of a series of activities and events planned at Ozark National Scenic Riverways throughout 2016 to celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service.

Aledmys Diaz homered, doubled and drove in three runs against childhood pal Jose Fernandez, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 5-4 Thursday. Diaz and Matt Holliday homered in the third inning against Fernandez (12-5), who had never previously given up more than one homer in a home game. The Cardinals play the Marlins tonight at 6:10. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Mitch Moreland's second home run of the game broke a tie in the eighth inning and Cole Hamels earned his 12th win of the season as the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Thursday night. Sam Dyson earned his 21st save in 23 opportunities. The Royals play the Rangers tonight at 7:05.

Funeral services for Betty Gibbons of Salem, age 80, will be today at 12:00 noon at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be prior to the service starting at 10:00 am. Memorials are suggested to the Backpack Program.

Funeral services for Martha Maxine Rogers of Salem, age 99, will be Monday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be prior to the service starting at 1:00 am. Interment will be held at the Cedar Grove Cemetary in Salem.
