The Salem Park Board met last Thursday for a re-organizational meeting. The board elected officers and Stan Podorski was elected President, Kyle Williams was named Vice-President and Chrissy Decker was elected Secretary. At the meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon stated the baseball and softball programs have now ended and the programs went pretty well. He feels the umpires may need to get in a little more practice for next year. Lydon said Youth Flag Football is next and he is going to try to organize a Co-Ed Volleyball program this fall. Lydon said Tyler Wofford has resigned his position and gone back to his old job, so he is looking for a replacement. Lydon did report that a co-ed slow pitch softball league will be starting August 8th and signups are currently going on through August 3rd. If you are interested in playing, please call 573-453-0660. Lydon did ask the board if they had a problem with an anonymous donor giving the city $100,000 for naming rights to the “all inclusive” playground the city wrote a grant for. The park board unanimously agreed it would help offset the amount of the local match and recommended to allow the request, and the motion also asked for Lydon to negotiate a definitive term for the naming rights in the contract. Chrissy Decker said the pool could really use its own wheelchair in case of an emergency as well as an AED, plus she said it appears a new battery pack is needed for the handicapped pool lift seat. Podorski said he would check with the Salem Memorial District Hospital to see if they could provide the wheelchair and AED. The board also is still somewhat confused as to their actual role in the Parks and Recreation operations. They would like President Podorski to ask the Board of Aldermen at their next meeting for a definition or guidance and he said he would. The meeting was then adjourned.
