missourinetLOCAL NEWS:

The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the courthouse. Sherry Lea was in attendance representing the Council for a Healthy Dent County and the Salem Public Library with a concern the public is being misled about the use of the donated county grant writing hours from the MRPC. Those grant writing hours the county receives for being a member of MRPC are to be used for the betterment of the county, not just by the commission, as they help these non-profit organizations save money when the commission does not have a use for them. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said the grant writing hours the county receives are only good for one year as they do not accumulate if not used within that year. They simply expire and are wasted. Commissioner Dennis Purcell said most of the grants the commission needs are written by the commissioners themselves such as using the Title 2 Funds and the MRPC is not involved. To show the impact of what those grant writing hours helped bring, Lea reported that according to Ruth Ann Parker from the Salem Public Library, the four donated hours from the county as well as the four hours the city gave the library helped provide for $400,000 in tax credits they received to improve their new facility. Lea explained the grant hours donated by the county and city to Healthy Dent County helped to provide for $500,000 in Neighborhood Assistance Program Tax Credits and a CDBG Grant for $250,000. Those funds went into the improvement of the old Armory to make it into a much needed community center. Lea went on to say that the rhetoric on the city and county not working together is nonsense. In her position, she has seen the city and county work together on numerous projects from sharing the cost of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks Economic Development grant to sharing the www.salemmo.com website. Commissioner Gary Larson said they are probably working together better now than they ever have. Lea also thanked the Commissioners for attending community events, meetings and serving on local boards. This service ensures that the commissioners are informed and up to date on community projects. Richard LaBrash wanted to let the commission know the last day to sign the petitions asking the Department of Veterans Affairs to allow a Veterans Clinic in Salem for veterans and their families in Dent County as well as Texas, Shannon, Reynolds and Iron Counties will be August 31st. Petitions are posted at numerous locations and all registered voters are asked to sign the petition in support of helping to get needed help closer for Veterans and their families. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Purcell said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5380, 5580,6630, 6640 and 6650 while materials would be added and grading done on county road 5090. Materials will also be added to county road 5670 and brush will be cut on Dent County Road 6240. Purcell said he would be attending a South Central Missouri Community Action Agency meeting this morning in Winona. District 2 Commissioner Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Road 2130 while materials would be added and grading done on county road 4330. Larson went on to say brush would be cut on county roads 6130 and 6160. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to congratulate all the exhibitors, buyers and participants at the Dent County 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said the last day to mail out a ballot for the Primary election will be Wednesday. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams gave the CART tax report and money collected in July was $55,958.71 compared to  $51,995.80 in 2015. The CART Tax receipts year-to-date are up $4,869.60 or about 1.27%. Deputy Wayne Becker and Sheriff Rick Stallings attended the meeting to discuss the cost of housing out prisoners. Becker said they have reached their annual budget already for the cost of prisoners and that does not include the July figure. Commissioner Skiles said the county cannot amend the budget unless there are unanticipated revenues. He said the county will keep an eye on the expenses and if the sales tax figures stay over-budget, an amendment may be made later this year. The next meeting of the commission will be Thursday morning at the courthouse and it will be open to the public.

Contractors working for the Missouri Department of Transportation will begin repairs under the east end of the Vichy Road bridge over Interstate 44 in Phelps County on today.  The work will result in the closure of the Vichy Road overpass from Tuesday through Thursday. Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route around the work zone.
