The Salem 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction held Saturday brought yet another record in sales dollars coming in at $185,188.15! At the sale, there were 26 cured hams sold for $5,782.40; two cured bacons for $430.20; three pens of chickens for $786.10; five market lambs for $8,748.50; two market goats for $1,360.00; 77 market hogs for $78,030.10, 19 market steers for $87,039.50 and four ribbons that sold for $2,500.00. The leading purchaser at the auction was Phil-Mart who purchased five hogs, two steers, two cured hams, one cured bacon and one lamb. With nine purchases, the Bank of Salem bought five hogs, three steers and one cured ham. Interstate Regional Stockyards purchased two hogs, one steer, two cured hams, one lamb and one set of market chickens. Intercounty Electric, the Dent County Farm Bureau and Smith Valley Angus & Jadwin Lumber each had six purchases during the livestock auction followed by Quality Machine and Fabrications, Town and Country Bank, Salem Livestock Auction, Rushing Construction Company and the Phelps County Regional Medical Center who each had four purchases during the auction. The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their July meeting Thursday evening. Superintendent John McColloch reported Open Houses would be held Monday, August 15th and will run from 5:30 to 6:30 for William Lynch Elementary and from 6:30 to 7:30 for the Salem Upper Elementary. On Tuesday, August 16th, the Open House will be from 4:30 to 6:00 for the Salem Middle School and from 6:00 to 7:30 for the Salem High School. He also reported that roofing work at the high school is almost complete. The resealing of the parking lot at the Upper Elementary has begun and the floors at all the buildings are ready for the opening day of school. The Board then approved bids for milk from Hiland Dairy, bread from Sara Lee, food and cafeteria supplies from U.S. Foods, fuel from MFA and pest control from Integrity Pest Solutions for the 2016/2017 school year. The Board voted to set the tax rate hearing for Thursday, August 18th at 5:50 followed by the regular August Board meeting beginning at 6:00. The Board tabled a decision regarding the Developmental Preschool Lease until their August meeting. The Board voted to revise Policy IICC, approved as is the MSBA 2016B Board Policy Update and approved a budget revision for 2016/2017 by adding an additional $2,000 to the athletic budget. At that point, the Board went into closed session where they hired Kristina Summers as a High School Math Teacher. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident happened at 9:40 Sunday morning in Phelps County on Route T about six miles south of Newburg. An Iron Horse Motor Bike driven northbound by 68-year old Charles Hale of Edgar Springs, overturned on the roadway. Hale suffered serious injuries and was flown from the scene by the Mercy Lifeline to the University Hospital in Columbia. The bike had moderate damage and was removed from the scene by C&C Towing.

An accident occurred on Friday, July 22nd at 10:50 in the evening in Dent County on Highway 32 about 11 miles East of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by 53-year old Marie Georgecopoulos of Bunker lost control, ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned. She suffered moderate injuries and was flown by Air Evac to the Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. The vehicle was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District will host a pre-application grant workshop from 10:00 in the morning to noon Tuesday at Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) to share information on the district’s grant process. The grant program provides grant funds to local governments, schools, private businesses, nonprofit organizations and individuals for implementing waste reduction, reuse and recycling projects in its seven-county area which includes the counties of Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties. Grant funds may be used for various programs including education, solid waste reduction including facility food waste reduction, re-use, recycling, composting, collection and processing, research and development and market development for products made with diverted materials. The workshop will be held at the MRPC offices at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James. Grant guidance and applications may be found at www.ozarkrivers.org. Adrian Gonzalez hit a grand slam and Howie Kendrick added a two-run homer, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers spoil Mike Mayers' major league debut in a 9-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night. The Cardinals play the Mets tonight at 6:10. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Delino DeShields homered in the seventh to break a tie and the Rangers beat the Royals 2-1 on Sunday. Edinson Volquez allowed one run and seven hits in six innings. The loss dropped the Royals to 48-49, the first time the World Series champions have been below .500 since May 15. The Royals will host the LA Angels tonight at 7:15.

Funeral services for L. Gertrude Chrisco of Salem, age 95, will be held today at 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Sam Mikel of Steelville, age 87, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4:0 to 8:00 Monday. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

A funeral mass for Jocile Jean "Jo" Shelton of Salem, age 74, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 until the service time Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Food Bank. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Funeral Mass for Gerard George Lesyna of St. Louis, formerly of St. James, age 92, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.

Funeral services for Betty Gibbons of Salem, age 80, will be Friday at 12:00 noon at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be prior to the service starting at 10:00 am. Memorials are suggested to the Backpack Program.

Funeral services for Martha Maxine Rogers of Salem, age 99, will be Monday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be prior to the service starting at 1:00 am. Interment will be held at the Cedar Grove Cemetary in Salem.
