The Dent County Commission met Thursday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. During road reports, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6540, 6545, 6550 and 6520 while brush would be cut on county roads 5010 and 5015. He stated that patching of chip and seal continues on county road 6240. Purcell said that he attended the tourism meeting Monday night and that a total of five proposals were presented. Four of the proposals were approved for reimbursements and one proposal was approved for a new project. He went on to say that the Title 2 road improvement project, on Dent County Roads 5600, 5610 and 5615, with the U.S. Forest Service, has now been completed and the reimbursement for this project for the calendar year 2015/2016 of $21,800 has been sent. Purcell also stated that approval from the U.S. Forest Service for 2016/2017 of $15,000 has been approved and that project would then complete the road improvements on county road 5610 and the county would be able to continue road improvements on county road 5600. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4050 and 5323. He went on to say that materials only would be  added to county road 2130 and grading only would be done on Dent County Roads 4433, 5320 and 5325.  He went on to say that two men would finish patching Dent County Road 2315 in preparation for the overlay project next week. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles reported that he attended the Jump Start meeting Tuesday where the data that has been collected was shared and is being put together to come up with an action plan. Skiles also wanted to congratulate the Prosecutor’s Office and Deputy Wayne Becker on the handling of a long standing child abuse case last week. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting continues in her office at the courthouse through August 1st. The County Clerk’s office will be open for absentee voting on Saturday, July 30th from 8:00 until noon and the  last day to request an absentee ballot be mailed out is Wednesday, July 27th. She did state that the voting equipment would be tested on Wednesday, July 27th. If anyone has had an address or name change since you last voted, please stop by her office at the courthouse or call her office at 729-4144. Curley also stated that bills were being approved. She went on to say the assessed valuation for Dent County for 2016 has been sent to the state. The assessed valuation is $158,285,099 compared to the 2015 assessed valuation of $157,318,324. She stated that the real estate valuation was up, while the personal property and new construction figures were down. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 6:25 Wednesday night in Dent County on Highway 19 about five miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2014 Dodge Ram driven by 65-year old William H. Weeks of Palm Harbor, Florida was traveling southbound while a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 16-year old Heath A. Ball of Salem was traveling northbound on highway 19. The accident occurred as the Dodge Ram and the Chevrolet Silverado side swiped one another. Ball suffered minor injuries and was taken by Salem EMS to the Salem Hospital. Ball was the only one not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge Ram and the Chevrolet Silverado both sustained minor damage and were driven from the scene.

An accident happened in Franklin County on Interstate 44 near mile marker 227 Thursday morning at 6:43. According to the highway patrol, a 2005 Ford F-350 driven by 41-year old Michael Leppo of Rolla, lost control of the Ford and it traveled off the left side of the road, striking a cable barrier. Leppo overcorrected causing the Ford to then travel off the right side of the roadway and overturn. Leppo suffered serious injuries and was taken by Air Evac to the Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident and the Ford F-350 was totaled in the accident. It was removed from the scene by I-44 Towing.

Wednesday night at the 4-H and FFA Expo, a total of $7,965 was raised in the pie and bakery auction held at the Youth Building with the sale of 57 desserts. A big thank you goes out to all those who attended and purchased the desserts, and for those who prepared the desserts. Today’s 4-H and FFA Expo at the Dent County Commons will feature 19 market steers, 80 market hogs, 8 market lambs and 5 market goats along with a number of breeding animals. Plus, there will be several exhibits of small animals including poultry and rabbits. The hog show starts at 7:00 am, followed by the sheep and goats at 1:30, small animals at 3:00 and the beef and dairy show at 4:00. Tonight from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, there will be old-fashioned family games and entertainment. On Saturday, July 23rd, the final day of the 2016 4-H/FFA Expo, there will be an FFA Pedal Tractor Pull at 9:00 am, and the 4-H/FFA Market Sale will start at 1:00. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the weekend as local vendors will have food available and admission is free to all events during the 2015 4-H/FFA Expo at the Dent County Commons on Highway 72.

Aledmys Diaz's walk-off single in the ninth inning gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the San Diego Padres on Thursday night. St. Louis, which scored four runs in the eighth, recorded its first four-game series sweep at home since beating Colorado on Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2010. Stephen Piscotty hit a three run homer in the 8th inning while Jedd Guroko had another RBI single against his former team. The Cardinals start a three-game set with the Dodgers tonight at 7:15. The Kansas City Royals were off yesterday and they will host the Texas Rangers for a three game series starting tonight at 7:15.

Funeral services for Brunhilde Barbara Babb of St. Robert, age 82, will be held today at noon at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until service time. There will be no interment.

Funeral services for Donald Lee Taylor of Salem, age 63, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Carr Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Funeral services for M. Rosene Jackson of Peoria, Illinois, formerly of Rolla, age 87, will be held Saturday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Upper Davis Spencer Cemetery.

Memorial service for James Lewis Poucher of Salem, age 54, will be held Saturday at noon at the Wilson Family Center in Salem. There will be no interment.

Funeral services for L. Gertrude Chrisco of Salem, age 95, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Sam Mikel of Steelville, age 87, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 Monday. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

A Funeral Mass for Jocile Jean "Jo" Shelton of Salem, age 74, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 until the service time Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Food Bank. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Funeral Mass for Gerard George Lesyna of St. Louis, formerly of St. James, age 92, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
