The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors met for the regular meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. Chief Financial Officer Monica Gargus gave the summary of operations for June that showed the hospital a gain from operations of $70,589 and an excess of revenues over expenses of $74,142. Inpatient admissions and outpatient registrations were down, but the hospital did have an insurance rebate of $109,000 during the month. The cash flow statement showed a gain in cash of $219,559 for the month with days in accounts receivable at 57. Chief Nursing Officer Mary Lou Brooks reported during the month there were 55 acute care admissions, 70 treatment room visits and 838 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 124 minutes. Also during the month, there were 177 ambulance runs with 137 patients being transported to the hospital, 43 surgery cases, 1,657 outpatient registrations, 253 home health visits, 8,801 lab tests, 964 radiological procedures, 156 CT scans, 39 MRI scans, 9 nuclear med scans, 719 rehab treatments, 182 dialysis treatments and 327 clinical visits.  Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas went over the Emergency Room quarterly surveys for April through June of 2016. A total of 159 surveys were returned and the results about the treatment patients received from everyone in the Emergency Room were excellent as were the explanation of the findings by the doctor. The SMDH Family Medicine Clinic Survey results for the second quarter were also excellent with nothing lower than a 97% positive rating. A total of 139 surveys were returned for the second quarter. In the Chief of Staff report, Courtesy Staff privileges were approved for Morris Scott Glover, DO for the Emergency Room. The SMDH Foundation will have a fund raising event in December and a date for the next golf tournament has not yet been set. Mary Lou Brooks said the next committee meeting for the Community Health Needs Assessment will be held on July 26th and they will be completing the action plans and interventions. Lucas reported on the Ozark Independent Health Alliance and there was more discussion on telehealth and making it easier for those who are technology challenged, and also there was discussion on information security concerning doctors who want to text instructions and information. This is not allowed because there is no way to know who sent the text. Lucas explained a partnership with the Shepherd’s Nook Food Pantry to help facilitate meetings with community partners in trying to promote the raising of funds for a new freezer and refrigeration system. The total cost will be about $40,000 to $42,000, and some money has already been raised from the Ozark Food Harvest and Homestate Health. Lucas also explained the hospital will have to have a new process to address patient grievances required by CMS so the hospital will have to adopt a new patient grievance policy. Mary Lou Brooks handed out a sample copy to the board members for the board to review and vote on at the next meeting. The board set the public tax meeting for Tuesday, August 16th at 5:45 to set the tax levy for the next year. The board also selected the new officers for the new fiscal year and they are Ray Bruno as Chairman, Ken Sheriff as Vice-Chairman and A.J. Seay as Secretary. Hospital Attorney Mark Weaver spoke about the hospital districts and boundaries. It is possible for the hospital to rid themselves of the six individual districts with a resolution and approval by the county commissions served by the district. This resolution will be presented at the next board meeting. The board then went into closed session.

The City of Salem Parks and Recreation Board will hold their first meeting since being appointed tonight at 6:00 at the Salem Community Center@The Armory. The agenda includes a programming update. Grounds update, capital improvements and a discussion on healthy concessions. The meeting was called by Salem Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their July meeting tonight at the Salem R-80 Boardroom beginning at 6:00 PM. After approval of the agenda, Superintendent John McColloch will update the Board with the open house dates and times and there will also be a facilities update. In new business the Board will address bids for milk, bread, food and supply, fuel and pest control. The Board will set a tax rate hearing along with the regular August Board meeting. The Board will then consider the developmental preschool lease, a revision of Policy IICC, the MSBA 2016B Board Policy update and a 2016/2017 budget revision. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The July meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

Tuesday night at 8:10, an accident occurred in Dent County on Highway 68 about six miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1991 Plymouth Acclaim driven by 60-year old Mary Skyles of Salem was traveling southbound and Sklyes fell asleep. The Plymouth Acclaim traveled off the left side of the road, struck a culvert and an embankment. Skyles suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Plymouth Acclaim was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem.

Jed Gyorko hit a two run homer in game one and along with solo shots by Yadier Molina and Matt Holliday, the Cards won the game, 4-2 behind the seven inning work of Carlos Martinez. Then in the second game of the day, Jedd Gyorko homered for the fifth straight game off San Diego pitching, connecting twice with all three RBI in a 3-2 victory that gave the St. Louis Cardinals a doubleheader sweep Wednesday night. The Cardinals will finish up their series with the Padres tonight at 6:15. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Tyler Naquin hit two of the Indians' five homers and had a career-high six RBIs, helping the Cleveland Indians rout the AL Central-rival Kansas City Royals 11-4 on Wednesday. Kansas City has today off. They start a three-game series in Kansas City with the Texas Rangers on Friday at 7:15.

Funeral services for Dennis Wayne Gott of Salem, age 64, will be today at the First Baptist Church in Salem at 2:00. Visitation will berom 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Welfare Society or the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Hospital in Seattle, Washington. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Loretta L. Weldon of Salem, age 99, will be held today at 5:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Brunhilde Barbara Babb of St. Robert, age 82, will be held Friday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:00 Friday morning until service time. There will be no interment.

Funeral services for Donald Lee Taylor of Salem, age 63, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Carr Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Funeral services for M. Rosene Jackson of Peoria, Illinois, formerly of Rolla, age 87, will be held Saturday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Upper Davis Spencer Cemetery.

Memorial service for James Lewis Poucher of Salem, age 54, will be held Saturday at noon at the Wilson Family Center in Salem. There will be no interment.

Funeral services for L. Gertrude Chrisco of Salem, age 95, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time.
