At the Dent County 2015 4-H and FFA Expo Auction held this past Saturday, initial results showed that 55 buyers purchased a total of 133 animals, hams, bacons and ribbons. The auction was comprised of 63 hogs, 23 steers, 7 lambs, four pens of chickens, one pen of rabbits, one goat as well as 25 cured hams, 3 sides of cured bacon and four ribbons with the total coming to $166,428.78. The leading purchasers at the auction included Phil-Mart who bought eight hogs, two steers, one cured ham and one lamb; Salem Livestock Auction bought one bacon, one ham, two hogs and two steers; Intercounty Electric who was the high bidder on one lamb, one ham, four hogs and a steer; Bank of Salem purchased four hogs, three steers, one pen of meat chickens and one ham; Interstate Regional Stockyards who purchased three steers, one hog, one pen of market chickens, one bacon and one ham; Smith Valley Angus/Jadwin Trim and Lumber who was the high bidder on five hogs and a steer; and South Central Regional Stockyards purchased three hogs and one steer. The totals for all categories showed that the cured hams sold for $6,167.83, the sides of bacon brought $771.30, the chickens brought $768.90, the pen of rabbits brought $90.65, the lambs brought $5,970.05, the hogs sold for $67,430.15, the goat brought $511.50, the steers brought $82,018.40 and the ribbons sold for $2,700. A big thank you goes out to all the bidders and buyers at the expo as well as all those who helped make the auction a huge success.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that his district received anywhere from 1.7 to three inches of rain, higher amounts to the south around the Montauk and Bunker areas. He said that a crew was sent to assess any damage in the areas such as washouts, downed trees as well as cleaning out debris from the culverts. He went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4080, and one man would be sent to Springfield to get oil for chip and seal repairs. Purcell also reported that he would be attending a Dent County Tourism Commission meeting. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson was not in attendance, and Sam Gorman gave the report of his district. Gorman said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3030, 3040, 4300 and 4310, while rock would be hauled to county roads 2200 and 2270. He went on the say that a crew would be working on a fuel tank on Truck #72 as well as servicing Grader #32. He also reported that a crew would be out checking roads for washouts. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to congratulate all of the 4H/FFA youth that participated in the 2015 4H/FFA Expo this past weekend. He also wanted to extend a thank you to all businesses and individuals and the Livestock Committee for a great 2015 Livestock Auction this year. Skiles said it was very very nice to see the Livestock Auction back out at the Commons. Skiles went on to report that he will attending the County Commissioners Association of Missouri meeting in West Plains this week and that there would be no Commission meeting this Thursday, July 23rd. He also reported that there would a Board of Equalization meeting Monday afternoon. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that after the Board of Equalization meeting, she would then have the assessed valuation totals and they will be sent out next week to all entities as well as county wide. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday, July 27th at 9:00 am at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public. 

In Friday’s Beef and Dairy Show at the 4-H and FFA Expo Dalton Smith won the Grand Champion Dairy Female and Senior Dairy Showmanship Award. Desiree Pickerel showed the Reserve Grand Champion Dairy Female. During the beef breeding cattle competition Dalton Smith exhibited the Kneaded Barnett showed the Champion Hereford Heifer along with both the Champion and Reserve Champion Hereford Bulls, while Ray Cunningham exhibited the Reserve Champion Hereford Heifer. The Overall Supreme Champion 4-H/FFA Bull was Barnett’s fall 2014 Bull and Dalton Smith’s Spring 2015 Bull was selected as Overall Supreme Reserve Champion. The Supreme Bull selections were mirrored in the Supreme Heifer competition as Barnett took Grand Champion with her Hereford Heifer and Smith Reserve Champion with his Angus Heifer. During the Commercial Heifer judging class winners were Dalton Smith’s black heifer, Brady Haggler’s Hereford influence heifer and Sierra Haggler’s Charolais cross heifer. Brady’s heifer won the Championship Award and Sierra’s won Reserve Champion. Twenty-three Market Steers competed with class winners exhibited by Dalton Smith, Brayden Headrick, Dalton Edwards, Brooke Adams, Taylor Bell and Brooke Shults.   Taylor Bell’s 1320 pound Angus influence steer was selected Grand Champion and Brooke Adams black steer was Reserve Grand Champion. The Junior Beef Showmanship honor went to Dylan Thompson. According to Judge Heintz “the exceptionally competitive and close competition” for Senior Showmanship Award went to Kenadee Barnitz. Repeatedly both judges Heintz and Buttram were complementary of the quality of the livestock, conduct and cooperation of the exhibitors, and the facilities of the 2015 Dent County 4-H and FFA Expo.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off Monday and will head to Chicago for two games against the Chicago White Socks. The pre-game will start at 6:15 with the first pitch of the game at 7:10 tonight on KSMO Radio.

Travis Ishikawa went 3-for-5 with a homer and drove in four runs, and the Pittsburgh Pirates continued their mastery of American League clubs with a 10-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Kendrys Morales and Mike Moustakas homered for Kansas City. The Royals play Pittsburgh tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Albert Verdell Leonard of Salem, age 90, will be held Tuesday at 12:00 noon at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Berry Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Berry Cemetery.

Funeral services for Blanche B. Burrus, nee Hutson of Salem, age 87, will be held Tuesday at 7:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time. Interment will be Wednesday at 10:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Children’s Heart Foundation.

Memorial services for Charlene K. Barnicle of Cuba, age 58, will be held Wednesday at 7:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Sonya Sue Schultz, of Ozark, age 71, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win or DCAWS.
