The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night at the city hall council chamber. At the meeting, the board heard from Alex Sellers requesting permission to block off streets around the courthouse square for an Alumni weekend event for Saturday, September 17th from 2:30 to 10:00 PM, sponsored by Chilton Oil Company. They will have live music from 6:00 to 9:30 and free food for everyone in the community. The roads to be closed are 4th Street from Highway 19 to Iron Street and Iron Street from 4th Street to 5th Street. The stage will be set up near the 4th Street and Iron Street intersection. The board expressed their concern regarding the parking for the Country Corner Café and requested Sellers talk with the owner and work with Street Supervisor Gary Glenn to reserve some parking spots for the restaurant. The request was approved. The board then heard from Sherry Lea representing the Council for a Healthy Dent County requesting five hours of the City’s MRPC grant writing hours to be used on their behalf for a Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) grant for a new gym at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. The request was approved. A request was made to use the Old Middle School parking and ball field area on July 29th and 30th for the sale of Mr. Leon Seneker’s estate. It was also requested that the alley running along the side of the Seneker property be partially closed. City Attorney William Camm Seay requested that the auctioneers post “park at your own risk” signs along the street closures. The request was approved. Nuisance Officer Jared Brown updated the board on the trailer court licenses. Brown has spoken with a representative from Citizens Bank of Newburg, the owner of the 701 E. Center Street property, and they have made numerous improvements to the park. The board approved their license. The 101 N. Park Street trailer court owner has not applied for a license and will be cited until they comply with the ordinance. City Administrator Ray Walden said representatives from the City, County and Chamber of Commerce met to discuss redesigning the current www.salemmo.com website that is shared by all three. Walden also said the Planning and Zoning Committee met recently to identify the residential and commercial zones in the city limits and the Park board will meet on Thursday evening at 6:00 at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Mayor Brad Nash thanked the citizens and businesses that have showed their appreciation to the police department in the last couple of weeks. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

The Salem Police Department released a report involving a person holding up signs and panhandling and a traffic violation. On Sunday, July 10th at 1:14 in the early morning, an officer located a 33-year old male of Salem in the 800 block of East Missouri Highway 32 who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and later released with a new court date after posting bond. Later that day at 9:14 PM, an officer received a complaint of a person holding up signs and panhandling passing motorists near the intersection of Fourth and Missouri Highway 19. The report led to the arrest of a 50-year old male of Salem for panhandling. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that same night at 11:31, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. Investigation led to the arrest of the driver, a 24-year old female of Salem on an active arrest warrant from Edgar Springs, Missouri. She was released with a new date to appear in court after posting bond. On Saturday, July 2nd an accident occurred at 10:50 on Pershing Street just about at Rolla Road. According to the Salem Police report, a 1999 Jeep Wrangler driven by James Mitschele of Lebanon was traveling southbound on Pershing just about to pass Rolla Road. A 2004 Ford Ranger driven by Carolyn White of Salem was on Rolla Road and attempted to crossover Pershing Street and pulled out, failed to see the Jeep and made contact with the Jeep. Mitschele complained about left shoulder pain. No other injuries were reported. The Jeep Wrangler sustained moderate damage while the Ford Ranger sustained minor damage.

On Monday, July 11th an accident occurred that afternoon at 3:35 on Highway 19 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2001 Ford Focus driven by Dustin Counts of Salem was merging north on Highway 19 from the center turn lane. A 2006 GMC Envoy driven by Donna Murr of Salem was driving north on highway 19. The Ford merged into the northbound lane and collided with the driver side door of the GMC. A passenger in the GMC was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for medical care. The Ford Focus and the GMC Envoy both sustained moderate damage and both were moved before the officer’s arrival.

Inclement weather washed out Tuesday's contest between the Padres and Cardinals at Busch Stadium. A makeup game between the two clubs slated for 1:15 p.m. and 7:15. The matinee will serve as part of a day-night doubleheader.  You can hear these games on KSMO Radio starting at 12:20 and 6:20 respectively.

Danny Salazar handled the Royals for the third time this season, the Indians roughed up Kansas City's starter-by-committee and Cleveland rolled to a 7-3 victory Tuesday night to even their three-game series. The Royals will finish up their three-game series with the Indians today at 1:15.

Funeral services for H. Bernice Wisdom of Licking will be held at 1:00 PM on today at the United Baptist Tabernacle Church in Bunker. Interment will be in the Corridon-Reynolds Cemetery in Reynolds, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Bernice Wisdom’s Funeral Fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Melvin Burks of Oblong, Illinois, age 83, will be held today at James and Gahr Mortuuary Chapel in Salem at 1:00. Visitation will be held from 11:00 in the morning until service time. Interment will be in the Crisco Cemetery in Shannon County.

Funeral services for Dennis Wayne Gott of Salem, age 64, will be held Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Salem at 2:00. Visitation will be held Thursday from 9:00 in the morning until service time Thursday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Welfare Society or the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Hospital in Seattle, Washington. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Loretta L. Weldon of Salem, age 99, will be held Thursday at 5:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Brunhilde Barbara Babb of St. Robert, age 82, will be held Friday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:00 Friday morning until service time. There will be no interment.

Funeral services for Donald Lee Taylor of Salem, age 63, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Carr Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
