The Salem Board of Aldermen met Tuesday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. Alderwoman Molly Zettel was not in attendance and will miss approximately a month according to Mayor Brad Nash. The board approved the bid for hot mix asphalt from N. B West of Sullivan for $82 per ton for 1,830 tons and that work will be done in late summer or early fall. They also approved the bid from N.B. West for chip and seal work for $2.70 a square yard for 30,000 square yards and that work will be done at the end of July. The total amount came to $231,060 which is below the budgeted amount of $300,000. This bid is for the original streets approved by the Capital Improvements Committee. City Clerk Mary Happel reported that two trailer court licenses still have not been approved. The Park Street Trailer Court at 101 North Park and the trailer park at 701 East Center owned by Citizens Bank of Newburg are both in violation. City Attorney William Camm Seay will cite each for violations until they comply with the ordinance. City Administrator Ray Walden stated he received positive feedback on the Independence Day Parade and Fireworks, and $1,000 was raised at the fireworks display. Donations can still be made to the Dent County Community Foundation Board or at the City Hall Administrative Building. Walden said he will be meeting with a group interested in renovating the City Hall Auditorium Building, and the steering committee for the economic development group Jump Start will be meeting later this month. Walden said the auditors will be here in August and the Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a workshop in the near future. Mayor Nash thanked the city employees for their hard work in cleaning up the Commons and work during the parade, then appointed Alderman Chad Heithold as the “acting” chairman for the Utility Committee in the absence of Alderwoman Zettel and the board approved. The board then went into closed session to discuss contracts.
