The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their meeting Thursday evening in the hospital library. After approval of the agenda, the Board voted to go into closed session for Board of Director interviews to fill the position for District 6. After closed session the Board then went into open session and openly asked questions of the two candidates, Joe Hayes and George Gruendel. The Board voted by secret ballot and George Gruendel was nominated and will fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Joe Brand. Hospital Attorney Mark Weaver swore in George Gruendel and he will fill the seat until an election next April and may apply for the seat as early as January 2017. During the summary of operations and statistics reports for May, Chief Financial Officer Monica Gargus stated that inpatient admissions and emergency rooms visits were above the monthly budgeted amount. Outpatient registration was also above the budgeted amount due to the health screening. The hospital had a gain from operations of $81,025 for May. During the month, the cash flow statement showed an increase in cash of $810,774, but days in Accounts Receivables rose to 62. Gargus stated that they had hired a new insurance coder that did not work out after a couple months and that the current staff has worked overtime to catch things up. Chief Nursing Officer Mary Lou Brooks reported during the month there were 827 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 125 minutes. Also during the month, there were 193 ambulance runs with 147 patients transported to the hospital, 31 surgery cases, 2,104 outpatient registrations, 234 home health visits, 9,567 lab tests, 985 radiological procedures, 192 CT scans, 21 MRI scans, seven nuclear med scans, 677 rehab treatments, 148 dialysis treatments and 319 clinical visits of which 116 were for podiatry. Brooks also reported that Long Term Care is full. She said that the final report for the Community Health Needs Assessment will be presented at the July Board meeting. Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas reported that the Auxiliary will not have another meeting until Tuesday, September 6th at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory beginning at noon. At the May meeting, the Board addressed 2017 Finance Committee reports for market assessment, operating budget and capital budget and a request was made for the detailed listing by department for the Board members to take home before approval. The request was approved. The Board went over in detail and the approved the 2017 market assessment, 2017 operating budget and capital budget. The 2017 operating budget showed an estimated gain from operations of $44,189. Lucas then presented to the Board the strategic planning meeting mission, vision and value statements and the Board approved a resolution to adopt those for 2017. Lucas did state there would be a election of officers at the July meeting. The Board approved the purchase of two electric drum pumps for the Dialysis Department from Uline for $1,360 for both and this is a budgeted purchase for 2017 that was needed now. The Board also approved the non-budgeted purchase of a Ureteroscope for the Surgery Department from Unitas for $3,850. It was brought to the Board's attention that the election of members for the Board is somewhat confusing with the District boundaries that do not appear to be very clear. The Board agreed to look into the matter further to simply the process going forward. The Board then voted to go into closed session.
