An accident happened at 1:35 in the afternoon on Friday on Stoltz driver near route BB in Phelps county. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1999 Ford Mustang driven by 65-year old June Graham of Rolla was driving northbound, and attempted to make a left turn onto a private driveway when she struck a 2002 Honda Rebel driven by 72-year old Donald Hagan of Rolla. Hagan was ejected from his vehicle and sustained moderate injuries. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. He was transported to Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Both vehicles sustained minor damage.

The Dent County Commission met Thursday morning for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Road 6020. He also stated that bush was being cut, materials were being hauled and grading would be done on Dent County Road 5600, also known as the Turtle Loop. The material being hauled to county road 5600 is still part of the Title 2 work with the US Forest Service. He went on to say that he had 3 dump trucks along with pup trailers hauling granite chips for the upcoming chip and seal projects in July on existing chip and seal roads. Purcell said that he attended the tourism meeting Monday and there were 6 proposals of which, one was denied, one was tabled waiting on more information and four were approved. There were also three reimbursements that were approved at the meeting. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that brush was being cut on Dent County Roads 3020, 3050, 3233 and 3260. He went on to say he sent one man to get oil for the Dura Patcher for chip and seal patching in preparation for the chip and seal projects and chip and seal patching would be done on county roads 2240 and 2250. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commission Larson attended the Solid Waste Management District Board meeting Tuesday in St. James. At the meeting they elected officers and Skiles was elected as the Secretary. He stated that waste reduction packages for 2016/2017 will come out in July. There will be a waste management application workshop on July 26th at the MRPC in St. James from 10:00 AM to noon for anyone interested, and the applications are due by noon on August 19th. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the last day to register to vote for the August 2nd primary is July 6th by 5:00 PM. Absentee voting is going on now through August 1st at 5:00 PM in the Dent County Clerk’s office at the courthouse with a legitimate reason. The Dent County Clerks office will be open from 8:00 AM to noon on Saturday, July 30th for absentee voting. Sample ballots for the August primary are available at the clerk’s office and will be published in the Salem News on July 19th and 26th. For more information or to request a sample ballot, stop by the clerk’s office at the courthouse or you can call the clerk’s office at 729-4144 and request a copy to be mailed, emailed or faxed. Curley stated that with this being a primary election, you must declare a party when voting. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

This Saturday, June 25th, at Round Spring Campground, there will be displays and a program called “Civil War Along the Current River.” Local author Suzanne Chilton will be on hand to talk about the effect of the Civil War on the inhabitants of the Current River watershed. Special displays of Civil War items will be on loan from Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield in southwest Missouri. That evening at 8:30 in the Round Spring campground amphitheater, a special program will be presented by Mrs. Chilton and local musician Doug Harris, who will be playing music popular during the Civil War. The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Commission will conduct a meeting on Monday, June 27th, called by Chairman, Jerry Craig, at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 6:30. The purpose of the meeting will be to address a request from Keith Plank to change the current ordinance on set-backs. Following the meeting will be a workshop. At the workshop the Planning & Zoning Commission will address the definition of an in-home business, the status of the zoning map, and set-back regulations. They will also discuss residents following actions made by the Planning & Zoning Board as well as miscellaneous items concerning planning & zoning. The meeting and the workshop of the Planning & Zoning Commission is open to the public.

The Artist in the Woods exhibit at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center (ONCRC) will open July 1st at 202 South Main in Salem. This exhibit is sponsored by the Spring Creek Artisans of Salem and the Current River Artists of Licking. It will feature works by artists and artisans from these two groups as well as others from the area. Displays wood carving, quilting, pottery, basket weaving, engraving, fine arts and other time honored skills. The exhibit is free to the public. To participate in the exhibit, contact the ONCRC by calling 729-0029. Registration is required to reserve exhibit space. Display setup begins at 10:00 AM on June 29th. Displays will be removed starting 10:00 AM on July 26th.

An accident occurred at 6:54 Wednesday night in Miller County on Route U about a half mile west of Route EE. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 62-year old Stanley Snelson of Rolla was traveling eastbound and fell asleep. The Chevrolet Tahoe exited the right side of the roadway, struck a dirt embankment and overturned. Snelson suffered serious injuries and transported to the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia by Staff For Life helicopter service. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Tahoe was totaled and removed from the scene by Bradshaw’s Auto and Towing.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off Thursday. The Cards will now head to Seattle for the three game series against the Mariners. The pre-game show starts at 8:15 tonight, 8:15 Saturday night and 2:15 Sunday afternoon on KSMO Radio 1340 AM.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off Thursday. The Royals will head to Houston for their weekend series against the Astros beginning tonight at 7:15.

Funeral services for Richard L. “Dick” Rogers, age 83, of Rolla, MO, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Greentree Christian Church, Rolla, MO. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for Stanley Leon Craft of St. James, age 64, will be held today at 12:00 at the First Pentecostal Church of Vichy. Visitation will be from 10:30 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the First Pentecostal Church of Vichy. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Funeral services for Joyce H. Cornelius of Rolla, age 77, will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time Saturday. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for 89 year-old William Kickbush of Rolla will be Wednesday at 1:00 at the United Methodist Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Fund.
