missourinetLOCAL NEWS:

An accident occurred at 10:30 Sunday morning in Dent County on Highway 19, about seven miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 20-year old Sarah Chase of Salem was traveling southbound when she traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected and overturned. Chase suffered minor injuries and was transported by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The car was totaled and towed by Whitaker's Towing.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education met Thursday evening for their regular meeting. Superintendent John McColloch provided the board with a facilities update that included work on the senior high and junior high parking lots. The upper elementary parking lot will be worked on soon as there are some major cracks in that lot that will need to be addressed before the lot is sealed. He said the skin and membrane of the roof over the choir building is being removed and replaced, and he said the major roof project at the senior high will begin by July 5th or sooner if possible. He said there were two concrete projects done this summer with new steps at the high school and in the connection hallway where it had been gravel. McColloch said the Salem school busses were inspected by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and passed with a 100% score. He said they received a Distinction of Total Fleet Excellence Award. McColloch said the big HVAC unit on the Upper Elementary School is not working properly and they have had to call a specialist from Fenton to come to work on the unit. In the Summer school report, Principal Kriste Crocker reported she had 93 kindergarten and 1st grade students while at the Upper Elementary, Principal Melanie Wisdom said she had 165 children enrolled with about 130-140 attending daily in grades 2 through 6. Middle School Principal Scott Roberts said the Salem Archery team would not be going to the World Championship in Myrtle Beach as only 11 of the 16 team members could go and they needed 12 team members. He had three students attend Summer school and 2 of the 3 received credit recovery to move from the 8th grade into the 9th grade. High School Principal Marty Anderson said there 17 students attending Summer school with 11 of them getting credit. There were 15 children enrolled in the Drivers Ed program. The Board of Education assignments were kept the same as they were last year. Assistant Superintendent John Smith said the unofficial Average Daily Attendance for the district came in this year at 92.1% based on his calculations which is fantastic. The board discussed the 2016-2017 budget. Revenues for the year are expected to be $12,246,038 while the expenses are expected to be $12,158,008. These were conservative figures according to Superintendent McColloch. Last year the revenues were at $12,900,000 but that was because they had billed out late and received over $500,000 after the start of the fiscal year that belonged to the previous fiscal year. The projected expenses for 2015-2016 came in at $12,050,000 with still two weeks left in this fiscal year. McColloch said the increase in budgeted expenses from 2015-2016 to the 2016-2017 budget was the increase in teachers salaries. The board approved the 2016-2017 budget. McColloch went on to say that he found out the district can make a WADA transfer any time during the school year, not just once in the summer. He proposed making a 5% transfer from Fund 1 to Fund 4 that will come to about $337,457 and will help pay for the roofing project that is expected to come in at $247,912. The balance after that should be close to $650,000. McColloch said next year he will ask the board for a 7% transfer that will put the district over $1 million dollars in Fund 4 and they will then be able to look at other projects. The board approved the transfer. McColloch reported that he spoke with Sherry Lea from the Council for a Healthy Dent County and her board agreed to give the employees of the partners a 25% discount off the fitness center membership. He said the R-80 School had been a partner from the beginning when they were the Salem TCRC and recommended continuing the partnership contribution of $10,000 and the board approved. The board approved the resignation of High School Math Teacher Sheila Wigger and the retirement of David Beason as a physical education teacher before going into closed session.
