An accident occurred Sunday afternoon at 4:30 in Phelps County on Route B about five miles north of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Lincoln Town Car driven by 88-year old Douglas King of St. James was traveling southbound and struck a pedestrian, 21-year old Austin Deluca of St. James. Deluca suffered serious injury and was flown by Mercy helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia. The Lincoln Town Car sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene.

At 1:12 Monday afternoon an accident occurred in Phelps County at the I-44 Westbound 182 mile marker. According to the highway patrol report a 1996 Ford Explorer, driven by 51 yr old Albert Wesley of Rolla, was traveling westbound, when a rear tire blew out. The vehicle traveled off the right side off the road, struck a sign and the embankment. Wesley suffered minor injuries and a passenger, 40 yr old Donna Edwards of Rolla, suffered minor injuries as well. Both were transported to Phelps County Hospital. The vehicle was totaled and towed by C & C Towing. Wesley was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident, and Edwards was not.

Warmer temperatures, moisture and weakening pavement are three factors that add up to form the perfect storm for the pavement “blow-ups” that become common across mid-Missouri over the summer months.  Pavement “blow-ups” occur when the roadway surface expands at a crack or joint where moisture has seeped in. That crack weakens the pavement and the heat causes the pavement to buckle and warp. Motorists who come across a blow-up are urged to use extra caution, slow down, and call MoDOT to report the issue. Crews monitor state routes during the summer months for possible problem areas. Motorists can call MoDOT’s toll-free customer service center at 1-888-ASK-MODOT (275-6636) to report pavement blow-ups.
