missourinetLOCAL NEWS:

On June 5th, a woman contacted the Dent County Sheriff's Office to report a suspicious man on her front porch. She stated a man was rolling around on the front porch stating that he had been beat up and was asking for water. Deputies were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the man. The male victim, Joshua Smith of Salem, stated he was assaulted by several individuals. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene and Smith was subsequently flown to a trauma center as a result of his injuries. Deputies looked into the incident and as a result of that investigation, Anthony Franklin of Salem and James Blankenship of Salem were arrested for Felony accessory to Assault in the 1st degree. They are currently being held in the Dent County Jail on $250,000 cash only warrants each. This information is just an accusation, and is not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of these charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it will be to determine their guilt or innocence.

The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday for their regular meeting. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported she was going to distribute the monies from the County School Fines Fund. A total of $115,719.25 will be distributed by a formula to Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-1, Green Forest R-2, Dent-Phelps R-3, Northwood R-4, Iron County C-4 in Viburnum and Bunker R-3 schools. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5525, 5530, 6255 and 6370 while brush is going to be cut on county roads 4122, 4124 and 5600. Purcell reported patching will be done on the chip and seal county roads 4250, 4253, 4255 and 5015. Purcell said he and City Administrator Ray Walden attended the MRPC Advance Strategy Economic Development meeting in Potosi on Tuesday. He said there were 10 presenters and they discussed grants, engineering and other types of funding. He said they discussed ways areas can start an “Incubator” program for new businesses and how communities need to give attention to retaining their existing businesses. On Wednesday morning, he and Commissioner Gary Larson attended an Insurance Consortium in Springfield where hospitals are starting to push the use of telemedicine. The consortium is in good financial condition and the commissioners were informed the consortium will go out for provider bids later this year. Purcell also reported that MoDOT will be chip and sealing routes K & E Tuesday, June 14th, weather permitting. Commissioner Larson stated that in District 2, materials were being added to and grading was being done on Dent County Road 2070, and brush was being cut on county roads 2240, 2620, 2630 and 2640. Larson indicated a driveway crossover pipe was being installed on county road 2020 and workers were working on the pup trailer to plumb it to the new truck. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported all three commissioners attended the Internet Broadband meeting Monday afternoon put on by the USDA and Missouri Department of Economic Development at the Salem Community Center@The Armory. The meeting was very informative in trying to provide broadband to the out lying areas of Dent County. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said her office and the Treasurer’s office balanced on all accounts. She stated the last day to register for the August 2nd Primary would be July 6th and the first day to vote absentee would be June 21st. She also reported on the bids received by the county for 1,000 gallons of unleaded gas and 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel. The low bidder for both was MFA Oil who bid $1.7765 per gallon of unleaded gas and $1.555 for each gallon of diesel fuel. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday at 9:00 AM at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Get hooked on fishing with the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Free Fishing Days Saturday, June 11th and Sunday, June 12th. During Free Fishing Days, anyone may fish in the Show-Me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout permit, or trout park daily tag. Normal regulations remain in effect, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler may keep. Special permits may still be required at some county, city, or private fishing areas. Trespass laws remain in effect on private property. Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish, and Free Fishing Days encourages people to sample the state's abundant fishing opportunities. Missouri has more than a million acres of surface water, and most of it provides great fishing. More than 200 different fish species are found in Missouri, with more than 20 of them being game fish for the state's more than 1.1 million anglers. For information on Missouri fishing regulations, permit requirements, fish identification, and more, get a copy of MDC's "2016 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations" where permits are sold, or go online to huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/fishing.
