The Salem Police Department has released some reports. On Friday, May 27th at 9:18 in the morning, an officer was sent to a residence in the 900 block of South Warfel in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged a cedar tree valued at $50.00 in the yard of a residence. That same morning at 9:31, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1400 block of South Gertrude in reference to property damage. The report revealed that someone unknown put spray paint on a blue and silver 1992 Dodge Dakota causing property damage valued at $200. Early that afternoon at 12:37, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of East Hunt in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged concrete yard ornaments valued at $280. Later that same afternoon at 3:14, an officer was sent to a residence in the 100 block of North Park in reference to an assault. The report revealed a 26-year-old Salem female had assaulted a 27-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court for assault and was released. That night at 8:44, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft.  The report revealed that someone unknown took a Glock .380 handgun valued at $480.00 from the glove compartment of a vehicle. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage reports and theft is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their June meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed and approved the Board reviewed and approved bills noting the bill for Workman Comp of $6,992 and the budget was also reviewed. The calendar of events was then reviewed and in the monthly reimbursement report presented, the report showed that there were a total of 11 calls for the month of May. The calls for May included: two calls for structure fires, one call for a brush fire, one call for a car fire, three calls for first responders, one call for a vehicle accident, one call for haz-mat and two calls for training. Total calls to date for the year is 130. In old business it was reported that the new brush truck is at the paint shop waiting to be painted. In new business the parking lot is being evaluated as to the best procedure to repair. During reports, the Fire Fighters are in the last phases of training and will be taking certifications in Jefferson City. The Board then set their next meeting for Tuesday, July 5th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 PM and the meeting was then adjourned.

At the Salem Board of Aldermen meeting Monday night in closed session, the board agreed to a contract with The Commons to host the discharging of fireworks on July 4 with some minor variations to the contract from last year. The board also entered into an agreement with McLiney and Company to prepare a financial study and feasibility study for financing options the city may have available for the new wastewater treatment improvements required by the Department of Natural Resources. There is no cost for the services performed by McLiney and Company unless the city elects to issue bonds or do other financing through them for the wastewater treatment project. Closed session was then ended and the regular meeting was adjourned.

For the first time ever, Phil-Mart at 500 S. Main in Salem, is being inducted into the Missouri Lottery’s 2015 Million Dollar Club. Owned by Dan and Julie Salyer, the elite Club is comprised of all Missouri Lottery retailers that sold more than $1 million in Lottery products during a given calendar year, collectively generating millions to public education. The 2015 Million Dollar Club is comprised of 28 retail locations, which collectively generated more than $8.6 million for public education based on their Lottery sales in 2015. Lottery sales from this Phil-Mart alone contributed more than $240,000. Sales from every Missouri Lottery retailer benefits public education, and that the Million Dollar Club is a way to honor retail locations that are going above and beyond to raise money for a variety of programs, including A+ Scholarships, Virtual Schools, Special Education Excess Costs, Access Missouri, the Classroom Trust Fund, library acquisitions and educational scholarships.    

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem present, “Star Spangled Salute from the Ozarks”, as this years’ theme for the Independence Day parade in Salem, which will be held on Monday, July 4th beginning at 6:00 pm. Those interested in participating in the July 4th parade should fill out an entry form and return the completed form by Wednesday, June 29th. A reminder, no ATV’s are allowed. Lineup positions will be on a first come, first served basis, and available by July 1st. Brandon Moss homered in consecutive at-bats, Matt Adams and Jhonny Peralta added three-run drives and the St. Louis Cardinals rolled over the Cincinnati Reds 12-7 Wednesday night. Every St. Louis starting position player had at least one hit, and Cardinals relievers retired their first 10 batters as St. Louis won for the third time in four games. The Cardinals finish the series with Cincinnati tonight at 6:10. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 5:15.

Chris Tillman pitched effectively into the eighth inning to earn his seventh consecutive win, Ryan Flaherty drove in two runs and the Baltimore Orioles extended the Kansas City Royals' losing streak to seven games with a 4-0 victory Wednesday night. The Royals are off today, they start a three-game series with the White Sox on Friday.

Funeral services for Leland Greenwalt of Park Hills, formerly of Wesco, age 73, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Steelville. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.

Funeral services for Jacqueline F. “Jackie” Givens of Jadwin, age 81, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Gladden Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Gladden Empire Cemetery.

A Masonic memorial service for Denzil Jewarld Radford, Sr. of Republic, formerly of Salem, age 81, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Grand Masonic Lodge 225 in Salem in lieu of flowers.

Funeral services for Brenda Louise Moore, of Salem, age 67, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be given to DCAWS.
