A Salem resident was killed and another seriously injured Wednesday evening about 8:26 in Cole County on eastbound Highway 54 at Fall Hill Road. According to the Highway Patrol report a 2004 GMC Yukon, driven by 74 year-old Richard F. Cole, was in the eastbound right lane and for unknown reasons swerved off the left side of the roadway, striking a rock bluff. Richard Cole was pronounced dead at the scene, while a passenger, 72 year-old June M. Cole sustained serious injuries and was transported to the University Of Missouri Hospital by Staff For Life Helicopter Service. According to the report both occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seat restraints. The GMC was totaled and removed from the scene by Tow Pro.

The Dent County Commission held their meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. During road reports, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5400, 5220, 6435 and 2460. He went on to say that brush would be cut on county road 5600 and a crew would be re-wiring a pup trailer. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4380, 5260 and 2240. He also stated that material would hauled to county roads 2570, 5320, 2060 and 2025 and that brush could be cut on Dent County Roads 2300 and 6150. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone to be extra cautious, with all the sudden rains and downpours, most streams and low lying areas are already saturated, and the chance for flash flooding can occur very quickly. He urges everyone to remember the statement, “turn around, don’t drown” it is not worth losing a life. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported that she is transferring $7,500 from the Inmate Security Fund to the Law Enforcement Fund, per budgeted approval and this would complete the final $15,000 transfer for 2016. Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings and Deputy Chris Robbins were present for the opening for the bids on the patrol rifles for the department’s vehicles. Two bids were received and the Commission voted 3-0 to go with the lowest bid of $774 each, plus shipping from Kiesler’s Police Supply Inc. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released several reports that occurred on Friday, May 20th. At 11:37 that morning, an officer located a 36-year old Salem male in the 600 block of McGrath Lane who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. Early that afternoon at 12:22 an officer located a 30-year old Salem male in the 1000 block of South Oak who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. Later in the day at 3:42 an officer located a 35-year old Salem male in the 500 block of Tower who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. Then at 4:41 that same afternoon, an officer located a 28-year old Salem male in the 600 block of South Jackson who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  He was incarcerated on the warrant pending a court appearance and issued summonses to appear in court for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. That night at 9:00 an officer was patrolling the Salem High School parking lot.  After the officer detected the smell of marijuana a K-9 search of a vehicle was conducted. The search of the vehicle led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem female for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was issued summonses to appear in court and released. That same night at an officer transported a 29-year old female of Rolla, from Phelps County to Dent County in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. She was incarcerated pending a court appearance.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off Thursday and will start a three game series at Busch Stadium with the San Francisco Giants. Game time is 7:15 tonight, 6:15 Saturday night and Sunday night at 6:10, you can hear it all on KSMO Radio.

Mike Napoli's sacrifice fly scored Francisco Lindor with the winning run to cap a two-run ninth inning and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Thursday night. Cleveland rallied against Joakim Soria (2-2), filling in as closer for Wade Davis, who had pitched three of the last four days. Francisco Lindor's triple tied the game before Napoli scored the game winner. Carlos Santana led off the Cleveland ninth with a single and made it to second on right fielder Paulo Orlando's fielding error. The loss ended Kansas City's six-game winning streak. Kansas City plays the Indians tonight at 6:10.

Funeral services for Joyce Christine Pax of Salem, age 69, will be Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the family of Joyce Pax.

Funeral services for Amanda Lynn “Mandie” Atkinson of Salem, age 32, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Dr. Richard E. Cole of Montauk, age 74, will be held at 11:00 on Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Monday from 6:00-8:00 with a prayer service at 7:30, at the Church. Interment will be at the Sacred Heart Columbarium. Memorials are suggested to the Mid Ozark Casa Program. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County James and Gahr Chapel in Salem.

Funeral services for Doris Grieg of St. James, age 82, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the St. James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetary of St. James. Memorials may be given to Adams Cemetary.

Funeral services for Kenny Pratt of Steelville, age 85, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral home. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetary in Steelville
