The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting Thursday at the courthouse. Representing the Industrial Development Authority Board, Dean Jones and Donald Dodd reported to the commission their board voted to accept the assessment of the old Rightway remanufacturing plant from Dent County Assessor Tina Whitaker of $6,713. The building is owned by the IDA and part of it is being leased. The IDA is supposed to pay the property tax on the building and requested that since only half of the building is being leased, they would like to receive a 50% abatement and pay $279 per month. The commissioners agreed to the abatement, but wanted to make sure that it did not conflict with state statutes. Prosecutor Andrew Curley discussed the issue with Whitaker and said she could abate the assessment 50%. Curley said Whitaker would present her recommendation to the commission first before meeting with the IDA board. A discussion was then held on an economic development position being created for the City of Salem and Dent County to work with Jump Start in furthering economic development in the county.  In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said areas south of Salem received as much as 2.7 inches of rain with high winds. Work crews removed trees across the road at Cedar Grove and also removed a tree from Dent County Road 6460. Purcell said crews did not get finished until 6:30 Tuesday night. He said patch grading was going to be done on a number of roads in the Bunker and Turtle areas and east of Spring Creek. He stated materials would be added and grading done on county road 6580, brush was going to be cut on county road 5690, and a backhoe was going to county road 6230 to retrieve material that washed off a pipe crossing. Purcell said he spoke with Dan Lennon from the Missouri Division of Tourism and he said Dent County qualifies for a number of tourism grants to promote events in Dent County. He will contact the Salem Chamber and Salem Area Community Betterment Association with his information. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said patch grading would be done on Dent County Road 4283 while grading was supposed to be done on county roads 3220 and 4290 before the rains came Thursday. Larson indicated brush would be cut on county road 6150 while materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2500, 2540, 2590 and 4290. Larson did say a man would be screening rock or doing maintenance, depending upon the rain. Larson then set up a meeting in Salem with the Missouri Department of Economic Development’s Luke Holtschneider to discuss possible grants for broad band Internet coverage in Dent County on Monday, June 6th at 1:30 in the afternoon at the Salem Community Center@ the Armory to discuss the options available to Dent County. Larson said the grants could be from a minimum of $100,000 up to three million dollars. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported the courthouse would be closed on Monday for Memorial Day. He said the next meeting would be next Thursday at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting will be open to the public.
