The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their board meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices. In the superintendent ‘s report, Superintendent John McColloch indicated revenues for the school were up this past year to about 11.9 million dollars while the expenses have remained fairly stable at 9.756 million dollars. After all expenses are in for the school including the last payroll, that should leave an additional $500,000 or so more than last year. McColloch said the school will again be able to transfer 7% to Fund 4 this year with that excess. The excess funds also allowed McColloch to recommend increasing the base pay for new teachers to the district from $30,250 to $30,750. He felt this was necessary as Salem came in 45th in salaries out of 80 schools in the southeast region, but they are lower than most schools their same size. This increase will also bump up other salaries on the step salary schedule. The cost of this 1.3% salary increase to the district should be about $103,000 which includes taxes and benefits. Assistant Superintendent John Smith said the MAP and EOC tests are all complete and went very well. He said the preliminary scores are very good and he looks forward to seeing the official results. All the schools reported that over 92% of the students were at school more than 90% of the time. Special congratulations went to the Middle School Archery Team who qualified for the NASP World Championship in Myrtle beach, South Carolina in June. It was also noted that 14 of the 16 archers for the middle school were academic archers that means they have a GPA of 3.25 or higher. High School Principal Marty Amderson reported that the juniors and seniors participated in the ACT Workkeys testing this year and Dent County is now a certified Work Ready County. He said the high school is also initiating an ACT Hall of Fame for those students who score or have scored a 28 or higher on the ACT test as their name will be put on the board. Superintendent John McColloch asked the board to table the Healthy Dent County Renewal until the June meeting. He said he supports the renewal but is currently working with Executive Director Sherry Lea on trying to maximize benefits for the school’s investment. McColloch asked board to approve most of the suggested MSBA policies as is or with a slight adjustment, but asked that two of them be rescinded as they do not accurately apply to the polices at the Salem High School. The board followed his suggestion.  The board approved the Professional Development Plan for 2016/2017 of which 1% of school revenues are to be allocated. That amount comes to about $44,000. The board approved the building handbooks for next year with very few changes. The most notable change will be at the middle school who will adopt the high school policies on attendance and cell phones. The board accepted the resignations of FFA Advisor Josh Mareth, Business Education instructor Derek Durham, Girls Softball Coach and Physical Education Teacher Stanley Crum, High School Math Teacher Gary O’Day, Assistant Band Director Phillip Giacomelli and Assistant Varsity Track Coach Natalie Sellers. The board then went into closed session.

An accident occurred Thursday morning at 10:00 in Dent County on Highway B about 15 miles southeast of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Chevrolet Astro Van driven by 58-year old Leatha Lee of Centerville was traveling westbound and traveled off the right side of the road. The van struck a mailbox and two trees. Lee suffered minor injuries and was transported by the Salem ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Astro Van was totaled and removed from the scene by Schwartz’s Towing Service. The Dent County Sheriff’s Office and the Jadwin Fire Department assisted the highway patrol.
