The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported CART receipts for May came in at $57,114.75. She said that the year-to-date total is down $986.55 or .36%. Harold Tubbs dropped by to inquire about patching the chip and seal on Dent County Road 5015. Commissioner Purcell said that county road 5015 is one of the roads to be overlaid this summer. District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5520, 5530 and 5170, while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 5460. He went on to say that since District Two is short a man and a truck District One had loaned an operator with a truck and pup to help haul white rock to the MDC roads to help meet the June 1st deadline for completion of the contract. Purcell went on to say that Monday evening he attended a Tourism Commission meeting where approval was given to two proposals and three completed proposals were approved for reimbursement. He added that Wednesday morning he attended the Community Foundation of the Ozarks kickoff meeting for the Jump Start Grant. Purcell stated that Wednesday afternoon he attended an MRDC meeting where two loan proposals were approved. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson expressed his appreciation for the help Commissioner Purcell was providing his crew on the MDC project. He said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2210 and 5225, while materials would be added to county roads 2110 and 4060 and chip and seal repair was being done on county roads 2240 and 2300. Larson cautioned residents to travel with care on county road 4060 as there has been a crossing failure and a temporary crossing is in place. He went on to say that Tuesday he attended the USDA Rural Development Workshop on Community Connect Grants for broadband deployment in rural communities. The Commissioners agreed to have a meeting scheduled with either Chris Collins with USDA or Luke Holtschneider with Department of Economic Development and that interested community partners be invited. Larson added that Wednesday afternoon he attended the Community Foundation of the Ozarks kickoff and had the opportunity to comment on behalf of the Commissioners. He shared with the group that the Commissioners support the project and Salem and Dent County economic development. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported Tuesday he attended the meeting of the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Board. He said the Scrap Tire Program was discontinued April 1st and all counties are concerned about what they will do with scrap tires. Skiles said that solid waste grant applications for next year are due August 19th and there will be an application workshop July 26th. He noted that there will be a Job Fair May 24th at the Knights of Columbus Hall, exit 210, Highway UU, at Cuba. Employers will be searching for full-time, part-time or seasonal employees. At the last Commissioners meeting Sheriff Rick Stallings was in and he indicated he wanted to get bids on new rifles for the patrol cars. The Commissioners agree 3-0 to solicit bids. Bid specs can be picked up at the Sheriff’s office and submitted in an envelope marked Sealed Bid to the County Clerk’s office by 10:00 am June 2nd. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host a spring birdwatching workshop Saturday morning along the Current River. Birdwatching is the fastest-growing outdoor recreational activity and can be enjoyed by folks of all ages. Park rangers and birding experts will guide participants on an exploration of Big Tree, south of Van Buren. Spring in the Ozarks is one of the best times to view and identify a wide variety of native and migratory birds. Participants will learn about birdwatching and gain tips for successfully continuing this hobby on their own. Space is limited, so please contact Dena Matteson at (573) 323-8028 to pre-register and receive detailed information about the workshop.  Registered participants will receive a free waterproof field guide. There will be a blood drive today at Salem Wood Products from 11:00 until 5:00 at 200 Stave Mill Road. To give blood, you must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and present a photo ID. Currently there is a Code Yellow Alert for all blood types!

In the Tennis individual sectionals held Wednesday, Nick Hawach and Eric Wood lost in the singles matches, and the doubles team of Gabriel Morton and Kyle Hemken also lost their match. The team sectionals will be Saturday at Logan-Rogersville comprised of Salem, Warrensburg, Springfield Catholic and Thomas Jefferson Independent out of Joplin. Salem will play Warrensburg and the winner of that match will play the winner of the other two schools.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will play Jeff City Helias next week as they beat Bolivar, 5-1 in ten innings Thursday. Those two teams will play on Tuesday in Sectional play.

Matt Carpenter homered and drove in a career-high six runs and Matt Adams added four RBIs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 13-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night. The Cardinals start a three game series with the Diamondbacks tonight at 7:15. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Martin Jones made 22 saves in his second straight shutout and Tomas Hertl scored twice to give the San Jose Sharks a series lead for the first time in four trips to the Western Conference final with a 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues in Game 3 on Thursday night. Game 4 is Saturday in San Jose at at 6:15.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off and will start a three game series against the Chicago White Sox tonight in Chicago.

Funeral services for Doris Lee Norris of Kirkwood, formerly of St. James, age 91, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Brenda Louise Asher of Bixby, age 68, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Crocker-Stricklin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Crocker-Stricklin Cemetery.

Funeral services for Rosetta “Rosie” Anna Hubert of Sullivan, age 77, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Saturday. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville.

Funeral services for Etta Gorman of Salem, age 92, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Dent County/James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Patterson Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the SMDH Foundation for Long Term Care.

Funeral services for Arnette Shelby of Salem, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Dent County James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time Tuesday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ronnie Lee Norris of Salem, age 56, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the family for funeral expenses.
